On my 1641 cc engine, stock carb (Bocar 34 pict 3, I believe it has bigger
jets...if I understood my installer correctly), stock tranny, Engle 110
cam...it runs pretty decent...good pickup, no hesitation etc...
What are 1/4 mile times for a bug like this one? Anyone have a chart of
that (approx is ok) has a listing of engines from 1600cc to 2xxx cc, on what
horsepower they produce?
What does it take to have a 13sec bug? Anyone have one?

Thanks for the info.

>It is almost imposible to say THIS motor will run THIS time, and make THIS much hp. Your motor will produce around 65 to 70 hp depending on the heads, and compression ratio. As for quarter mile times, this is easier. a stock beetle will run in the 20 to 22 second range. My 1967 beetle runs 18.9 with a warmed over 1600. just remember to load up the tanny before you launch, other wise you are going to be picking up pices of tranny.

Hay Alex, well i couldnt tell you how fast your car might go, but i might
beable to give a good guess on how much it takes to go 13's. Money,, hhehe
really, it will depend on weight of car tires you use, gear ratio your using,
etc. but take a car like mine, car weighs in at 1620 with good tires, close
ratio, problably take some where in the 130-150 hp to run solid 13's, My
current set up is some where in the neighborhood of 170-180 hp and runs mid
12's (this hp is at the motor not the wheels) Its not really hard to make a
130hp motor, heres a perfect example, my borthers old street motor was a 1915
with a engle 130 cam with 1.25 rockers and superflow 2 heads, 8:1cr 48idf's
he put this motor together for under $2000 back in the mid 80's so add a few
bucks for inflation. the biggest cost is usually going to be the heads. if
you can make it flow, you can make hp. his motor ran 13'teens in a 1700lb car
on steet tires. ok i have rambled on enough Good luck and see you at the
races. Muffler Mike http://members.aol.com/mufflerm

I've driven a friends car, with (at the time) a 2.3 litre, and EVERYTHING
worked. FK-89 cam, superflow heads and all that. It was about 200
horsepower, and ran in the mid 13's in a 1303S with street tires (V rated
though I think)

The more money you spend, the faster you go!

8.1cr...I'm kinda new to bug racing..I know what it'll take to get a fast
bug, but I still dont understand a few things...
My background? I have a 1982 Chevy Silverado pickup 3.73 gears, TH400
tranny, and am building a 406 small block, 12.5 cr.. 550+hp.
How come you'all (bug racers) dont run 10.1 cr? or more then 8cr? Is a
4cyl engine not a good motor for high compression?

On that 170hp motor of yours, is that all motor, or do you have NOS, turbo
etc? Is your bug streetable, meaning, can you drive it 60 miles and it not
overheat etc? What about your front end? Fiberglass?

Thanks for the input..

Well,
Here's what it took to make turn 13.70's.and I could cruise at 75 mph all day
long. 93mph @4000 rpm in 4th Gear.
1853 cc engine.
Engine specs: 72' VW Case, 72mm GBE crank (older than I am), Stock length VW 311
rods balanced. 90.5mm Cima/Mahle pistons-W-Total Seal Gapless Second rings set
at 9.78:1 Cr, Engle W-125 Cam, Bugpack Lifters,Bugpack cut to length Chromolly
pushrods (Noisy), Berg 1.4:1 ratio rockers, 042 Vw heads Welded & ported (big-D)
42mm intake & 37mm exhaust. The carbs are Weber 48 IDA's with 40mm venturis,
exhaust is a 1 1/2" merged header with a 2 1/2" collector into a three chamber
flowmaster Muffler.
The trans is a Carter's unit with the stock 1-4 gears (Stock for 1965) steel
shift forks, welded 3/4,threaded super diff and sway-A Way race axles. the trans
is also solidly mounted into the car but untill you have gobs of H.P. 7 or race
this car only on the strip I have found this combination to work out well.
Sway-a way Urethane Transaxle mounts rear only. Stock front nose cone mount,
Padded Center Tranny strap. Also, a engine traction bar is mandatory!
Dave.

As for a H.P chart,
They're are too many variables to have a realistic chart.
Compression ratios, Head designs, Valve sizes, Cams, Rocker arm ratios, exhaust
designs, induction systems, Fuels, Ect.

I used to race American Muscle cars also. Recently sold a '72 ProStreet
Camaro, and an '89 Camaro RS Convertable Canyon Carver.

As I understand the compression ratio issue, since theres nothing cooling the
motor other than air - its difficult to run high compression ratios - espically
if its going to be a street driven car. High compression = high heat.

Since the VW is a air cooled engine & that the gas out there isn't what it used
to be they cannot effectively run high Compression ratios. Yes Even V-8 engines
have this problem. For reliability's sake the standard reccommended compression
ratio for a Air cooled beetle engine is 6.7:1 on 92! The maximum is said to be
8.5:1. This is for a Street engine that's driven regurarly. I am running 9.78:1
in my engine but it's a Race car/ weekend evenings only street race car.I can't
drive it on the street when it's 75+ out. I also use a 50/40/7/3 mix of 111
octane race gas, 92 Pump gas, methanol/ Top fuel. I also have this engine torn
down about every 6 months or sooner.
American cars have a different set of parameters. Heads are designed
better,cooling systems,ect. Even still I hear all of the time that's it's not a
good idea to run over 9.5:1. on the street with 92. A buddy of mine has a 568
BBC in his 4 door 1 ton truck & at 10.5:1 it pings all of the time & this is a
mild motor in top tune. You wouldn't hear this if this same engine was in a
lighter vehicle. detonation is there way before you can actually hear it. By the
time you actually hear it it's really a problem.
Dave.

Hay Alex
8:1cr, thats the question, well if you have read some of the other
replys, they have pretty much covered all of it. Air cooled motors are
just a little more sensetive to octain and compression. and when you
want to go play on the street all the time, that good gas gets
expensive.
As for my motor, yea its all motor in a 1620lb car. and mostly steel,
yea i have glass hood and fenders but thats it,if i were to put a turbo
on it, 270hp would not be out of the question. and with only 8.5:1 cr i
could get away with crusing at 60, last i checked it would cruse at 50
at just over 3000rpm. the rpms might be up there a little bit. The
superflow heads that i use are not exactly the greatest in staying cool
but it would work. If i were to plan a real fast commuter car, i would
stick with using real vw heads and have them worked on.
its definitly possible to run on the street with high compression, but
it gets mighty costly, my brother use to do it with 13;1cr in an 1800.
he had to add a big oil cooler, but when crused at 3000rpm the oil never
got above 180deg. (with the short gears in his car 3000rpm = 45mph)
If i had it all over to do again, and i wanted to run on the street
daily and go fast, i would set up a turbo motor with 7;1cr and just
force it in. Look at my friends motor, it will cruse all day long and
still push my car to 12.20's all day long.
well theres my story

Impressive! How much did that cost you/or how much does that cost? (approx
is ok) :)

Thanks for all the info!!

Dang Alex.
I used your Kendrick car and S10 project on social media.
I knew you HAD a bug just out of high school.
That was how many decades ago.....?
I've built hot-rod stuff since you were in puberty.

Youve banned me from your public sites, so here you are.

You don't have a VW Bug,
There's no BBC chevy truck (the "pink" truck dog-walked and stood crooked, just like your Kendrick car is.

I heard from facebook friends that you were on a rampage again yesterday.
I guess you saw my GPZ Turbo on my wall the night before.
Boo-Hoo....

Yeah....
Where's your running street car?
Or cars, I should ask?
Your turbo bike?
Oh yeah, you bailed on bikes when you crashed in your neighborhood.

Go away Alex.
Let your work show what you can do, not your mouth.

FYI....
I asked other SA shops about you,
One said they're gladly repairing your "shop's" failed engines.

Go away alex.
You'll never, ever out-do me in workmanship and quality or profession.
