I have been running a 2.3 ford in my Baja for the last 5 or six years.
I drive the car every day so it would make it a daily driver.
The Ford 2.3 comes in just about every ford with rear wheel drive up
untell around 1997. SVO Mustangs, Ranger Trucks, T-Bird Turbo Coups
etc. You can also convert to A/C with out a problem just get the
brackets, compresser etc. You should expect around 115-125hp in stock
form and should be able to pick up a used 2.3 for arond $150 to $300.
The only thing you realy need to look at is the gear ration in your
transaxle. It might be way to low for the 2.3 ford. I use my car for
off roading so it's not that big of deal but I would realy like one
more gear when on the highway.
No more valve ajustments, a real oil filter and drain plug. etc.
after running this for so long I can not see why people even
put up with a VW air cooled for a daily driver.
You will not look back after the swap.

What about the weight hanging off the rear end of your VW?
I have a '67 bug and original owner of a '75 Ford F-150
F$%ked Over Rebuilt Dodge, was always my favorite and I see no truth
to that at all. I think if you look a little further into the reasons
some of these crazy things are said you'l find entertainment value.
As far a Found On the Road Dead... the mexican stolen pickup market was
better for Ford pickups than for Chevy even tho there were more Chevys to
be stolen and sold in Mexico, the reason for that was not because they had
more get up and go or drove sportier (which they don't) but because they
would run longer with less attention and fewer replacement parts.
That's the way it used to be, don't seem true anymore. As an update:
I heard the Toyota pickup had beat out the Ford pickup for going south.
If you want something cheap to run and reliable you can read Consumers
Report I guess, but my money is on the "going south market share" method
of picking a winner.
Alvin Johnston <--Libertarian
ps- I've never, ever been broke down in my pickup where I couldn't go
ahead and drive it home, ever. With two tanks I haven't even ran out of
gas either.

Are you suggesting that saying something makes it true? ;->

I was just saying that most things that are said have a basis in
truth, such as superstitions,
Don't walk under a ladder, it's bad luck: Enough people must
have had bad experiences that it became sort of a cliché.
Black cat crossing your path... Came from the old belief in witches,
but now-a-days enough people must have swerved their cars in order not
to hit a cat and instead crashed into something worse, therefore, bad luck.
There must have been enough people with broken down
"appliances", to ADD truth to these sayings. Being a student of Auto
Tech, 75% of the broken items handed to the students for demonstrations,
had Ford or FoMoCo, on them. Therefore, I have avoided anything made by
said company! This was a personal opinion/view, and was meant as an joke,
its hard to display sarcasm with writing. Besides this IS a VW based
group, no?

Nope - He's asserting that the "truth" is the cause, not the effect.

As was my commment -- please don't take it personally. I used a wry
grin/winking smiley to convey what I hoped to be witty banter :-)
Thanks for backing up your statement with your experience, though.
Cheers,

i don't know anything about this particular conversion but i have heard,
by way of my mechanic, that a toyota r22 motor will fit and is supposed
to be a pretty nice conversion. don't read the mags much so i don't know
who offers this kit.

Actualy,
Why have i been looking for all those expensive engines like a corvair or porsche.
It turns out thet you can get these old Ford engines over here for (practically)
free.
They used to come in the old Ford Granada's over here. Noone will drive them
anymore, because of fuel economy. Would solve all the LPG conversion problems too.
I'll check out Baja's and Rockets again.
How much does that 2.3 engine weigh overall? I can't imagine that it
helps the oversteer any...

It adds about 100-150lbs we must not for get the added HP 115-125
As for over steer that is not a problem. It is more neutral steer or
even a little under steer if I have the Gas put down to the floor. I
have played with the SCCA guys a few times. Giving the fact it did
have a Swing axle (IRS now) in it and off road tires. and 12+ inches
of ground clearance. I did not do to bad in the Novice class around
mid pack. Mostly stock Hondas,Miatas and some Nissans. (Novice Class)
I got tired of my freind having all the fun with his Mits GSX turbo.
It's run what you brung and thats what I brung. I could be a great
driver with a poorly set up car or a fair driver with a well set up
car. who knows I was more than happy with a 9th out of 25 cars. I
would have been happy with a 2nd to last.

That is the only negative, a double whamy to the polar moment of inertia by
adding weight and length plus the CoG is much higher on the Ford. Esslinger
makes a nice aluminum head which saves 25 LBs though...
I have some experience with the 2.3 since choosing one for my Rotus Seven and
I'd like to list some of the advantages IMHO;
1) Important in some states for swaps, the 2.3 was produced in 1974,
pre-catalytic converter.
2) Produced in great numbers and parts are everywhere.
3) Strong enough for turbocharging with it's stout bottom end.
4) There has been much development and many race parts are available
(Esslinger, Racer Walsh, Ford SVO). Engine is expandable to 3 liters, choice
of factory fuel injection, turbo, dual sidedraft Webers, Holley 4V or 2V.
Don't slam me I'm also a VW nut,
John Caffrey
5)
At the risk of offending people true to the aircooled engine. You can keep it
all VW at least. Go here to see what I came up with. It was just something I
wanted to try.

P.S. My next project Bug is aircooled and all VW.

Dunno about him, but I bet his parents have..:-) Just kidding!
( I weighed one with radiator, hoses, alternator, adapter plate, etc. at 459 pounds. Kind of
like hauling a big extra passenger, ugh.)
You might consider the "wasserboxer" instead. The larger one can be hopped up and fits a VW
tranny with no adapter. Weighs about the same or less than the air cooled units. Nice motor
after you get past the corrosion on the heads....
