Like many others, I wrote a letter to Volkswagen in Germany requesting
a so called "Birth Certificate" for my -73 1303S. This was in the end of
March....

Yesterday I received a letter from VW where they regretfully told me
that the requested information was stored on "old and extremely fragile
mircofiche" and that "some are already unreadable through overuse".

If you want to have a look at the letter, I've put up a scanned copy on my
website, http://w1.111.telia.com/~u11107929/index_e.htm
(just scroll down to the bottom).

It's really not that important to me personally, since I already know when
my car was built (Thanks to the RAMVA FAQ...) but it would have been
nice to have this more "official" certificate. Anyone else who has got the
same sad news from VW?

Did you send the letter with money, or e-mail your request?

Okay, my German was never very good in the first place, and it's been over a
year since I was in class, so perhaps I can figure it out.

Thanks for your e-mail, not sure about the second half, I think it says
you'll get a copy soon, but am not sure.

They'll try to get it to you ASAP, but it may take them a while, not sure

Lieber Volkswagen Kunde, <snip>

Sorry, this won't let me copy what I got and put it here. Best I can do
is give you the link to the translator I used. I didn't make a lot of
sense out of the answer tho.

No I didn't do either :-)

I sent off a written request to:

In the letter I included the VIN-number and (IMHO) a polite
request for a "Birth Certificate"

I got the same letter today. Best $7.50 I ever spent! (not). Kinda
disappointing, as I wanted to know the factory options on my car. Not a total
lost cause though, I know my car was originally Pearl White with a Red
interior, and that is how I am restoring it. I got all vital information and
color combos from WW's website like carpet color too.

I e-mailed them about 4 months ago with a request. I received this friendly
little e-mail from them this morning:

Dear Mr. Mast,

Thank you for your enquiry in connection with your vehicle's records.

Regrettably, we are unable to provide you with the requested information,
as the historical vehicle data is stored on old and extremely fragile
microfiche. These records need specialist handling and some are already
unreadable through overuse. We apologise for this unfortunate circumstance.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Volkswagen Customer Relations

I guess that means they aren't giving them out anymore.

VWAG is still sending the Birth Certificates out. I just got the one I
requested for my father's '63 bug today. I sent $10 to the Customer Service
address in Germany about 3 months ago. The letter I received included the
usual information (color, engine #, date of production, date of delivery,
delivery country). They apologized for being slow with the reply because of
the "fragile records" too.

Wonder if they will ever get a "specialist" to come in and restore them and
make a few copies, so they can still give them out to everyone, who knows,
maybe even put it on a computer system! That would take FOREVER. They just
going to let them rot, or they gonna fix the problem?

Neil,
Have you tried VW at Milton Keynes? Customer support at Wolfsburg gave me
a contact address:-
Volkswagen Group (United Kingdom) Ltd.
Ms. Valerie Hall, Administrator
Yeomans Drive

Phone 01908 601 823
Fax 01908 601 991

They may have the same problem, I guess, but there may be separate records
of imports to this country. (I am assuming you are UK based as this is the
uk.... NG).

I received my bithcertificate a few weeks ago, and was it post marked

And the letter goes as follows:

Dear Mr. Berg.

Thank you for your enquiry in connection with you vehicle's records.

May we take this opportunity to apologise for the delay in response and
inform you that the microfiche format on wich historic vehicle data is
stored, is
extremely fragile and difficult to read. These records need specialist to
handle
and read them, hence it is a lengthy and time consuming process.

We can confirm the following information for your vehicle.

Chassis no.: 1 160532
Model: 113 Exportlimousine
Engine: 389752
Color: Green
Production date: April 12, 1956
Delivery date: April 16, 1956
Delivered to: Norway

We trust this information is sufficient and regret that other than the above
mentioned information is not available

Thanks for your patience.

Finally , today, after about a year, maybe even a year and a half (it's been
so long I've forgotten how long it's been) I received my letter from VW.
Kinda disappointing though. All I got was the chassis #, (which I had to
send to them), the model # 113, engine # (which I didn't have), color,
(white, that's all it said) Production date 05/12/1966 and delivery date
05/13/1966 and lastly delivered to (not registered). I was informed in the
letter "We trust this information is sufficient and regret that other than
the above information is not available." Still it's better than not
receiving anything.

George and All:

That info is about all that you can get from VWAG as far as I can tell. When
I first sent my request for info on my '73 in 1997 I got the same basic reply
that you did. (Luckily they didn't have such a long wait for a reply back
then). I received the same type of information about my Dad's '63 bug last
week.

I guess the thing I like the most about the Birth Certificate is that it
tells you the date the car was built. You can look up what day of the week
your car was made! Ever wonder why you have so many problems with your Bug?
Maybe it was built on a Friday. ;)

Hopefully, VWAG has sorted through their "fragile files" and they will be
sending out more Birth Certificates to owners soon.

I got my birth certificate today.
It was basically the same as the other example.
My VW was born aug of 67.
They must still be sending them out.
So keep the hope alive.

I waited for almost a year for the Birth Certificate for my '66 Sedan. I'm about 99% sure that the BC was incorrect in it information.
