Well, yes and no... No, your conclusion that the factory didn't do AC
installations is mistaken. Karmann ABSOLUTELY DID install ACs, but yes,
the parts were also available to dealers for addition after (or as a
pre-requisite to) the sale. The original parts from Karmann/VW were
expensive, however, and dealers were often hesitant to use them, so a
number of aftermarket ACs were also available and installed by
dealerships. And remember, delivery of Ghias was a problem, so getting a
car with an AC from Germany might have delayed a sale a long time, so it
is true that a good percentage of these units were installed "in the
field."
If anyone doubts that Karmann really did install the ACs themselves,
consider the comments above on how crude the installations were, and
then take a look at Marcus Pracht's '70 Coupe' It has the original unit
in it - and it still works! I took copious photos of it because I wanted
to document how the AC parts are installed - it's a curious
arangement... Maybe I'll post a pic or two up on the KGCNA web page or
run an article on it in a future Karmann Chronicles... QED.
I have compressors..... and I am sure I have the
mounting brackets too....

Hello I have a 71 ghia with ac and would like to know which sanyo and
sanko compressors (mod # p/n #)you use. My ac drags so much power from
the engine
and do you use the same compressor clutch???
