375 degrees F @ the sparkplug is fine, but 475 F is near BIG trouble. I
suspect that the "475" was a typo or your dipstick would NOT have been
cool to the touch...

My '82 Vanagon head temp (at #3) runs at about 350 in town, 425-450 at a
steady 65 and will hit 500-525 in the mountains. These temps do not seem
to hurt anything and I am unsure of the accuracy of my (VDO) gauge. I too am
looking for benchmarks.

I sincerely hope you're talking about cylinder head temperature. Oil
temps between 180 and 250 F are considered normal. As for cylinder
head temps, I don't know. I do know you're supposed to have the
thermocouple (sensor) under the #3 spark plug (the hottest cylinder in
the engine).
I too have an 1835 and running it lean or improperly synched will make
it run bad and hot!
