But here is the story in a nut shell. There are two types of 911 Shrouds
one you have to use an external oil cooler and the other has the cooler in
the stock position. With Bergman's you must use an external cooler. If
you go to my site, go to photos then REDGHIA the car is amazing but he has
to use electric fans with his coolers, the car over heats like crazy.
Type I's run much hotter then T-4's when both are in bugs. The reason is
the T-4 is much more powerful and is hardly working to push the bug. Also
the size of the T-4 heads dissipate head faster, so even running a T-1
fanhousing as I show in my designs, you can run up to a 2250cc and the car
runs cool. Some guys have gone larger but I feel they are on the edge.
Also keep in mind the Porsche shroud uses a Porsche Fan and Alt. very
expensive. So if you are running a T-1 1700cc or smaller the T-1
fanhousing should be fine. If you are going larger then think hard about
which 911 housing to use.
Personally anyone thinking of a powerful yet an engine that will go 150,000
miles or more no problem should think T-4. It actually cost less to just
rebuild a T-4 put in a mild cam and dual carbs and wind up with 125hp, then
building a T-1 to the same power and you are lucky if it will reach
25,000miles. I know were I want to put my money.
Here are some photos of my T-4 powered bug. The dual exhaust is stainless
steel from a 914.

AGG! Quit teasing! Where are the pictures of the bug with the engine
lid open so we can see the engine!?!? :-)
