Is it true that one can mount rear discs from a Porsche 914 directly
on a Type III seems impossible but I'd thought that I would ask....

Just curious....

I never considered it, but I'd say it is about as impossible as these things
get. The rear hub doesn't have the necessary mounts and it's a completely
different type suspension so I don't think you could just start swapping parts
around.

Actually it is rather easy to do this.....
take a type III hub turn it down a little(diameter)...
then you can mount up the rotor to the hub and the wheel to the rotor
all my dads drined with dune buggies have this set-up forget at the moment
how they attched the rotors to the hub but it was easily done.
they used gti calipers instead due to easier e-brake installation and the fact
that they are floating calipers they don't have to be perfectly centered over the
rotor itself. You have to weld a serious chunk of metal to the trailing arm
to mount the caliper to. Swingaxles are differnt from irs in ways of mounting
the calipers..
...
hope this helps

I got 'em on my 66.
The center hub of the rear drum is used to mount the rotor.
There are machined and cast adapter pieces that could be made by a good welding shop using
steel instead of alluminum.

I am not that impressed with them.

The Type 3 rear suspension is almost Identical to that in many porshe products.
