DKP stands for Der Kleiner Panzers, and is one of the most well known and
prestigious VW clubs in existance. That is why someone wants to get a hold of
a sticker. To be in the club, you have to live in Southern California, and
your car has to meet certain requirements. To view their website, click here.

... and that's why it never ceases to bug the **ck out of me to see the
gross error in their name.
Assuming they're trying to say "the small tanks" (plural), it should
read "Die kleinen Panzer".
If they're going to pay homage to Ferdinand, Adolf or whomever, it would
be appropriate to do so with something resembling proper grammar.

That was noted in the VW Book called the California Look VW. When DKP and
other So Cal Clubs originated in the 60s, many of the members were still in
high school and their German might not have been the best, but they wanted a
name that sounded cool. Another club had a name that in German would read The
Peoples Bridge Builders. The club originally came up with the name with the
help of long time
DKP I sponsor Joe Schneider, who owned Schneider Motors, which was a VW
dealership at the time in Anaheim CA.

Their German not so good?! Heck, try their grammar in general! LOL
You should see some of the students I have to tutor. :) 60's or 2000,
I think grammar's always needed a kick in the butt.

I was kind of surprised when I checked out their web site. All these strict
requirements. Like the 13.99 1/4 mile. Then I scroll through their members
ride pictures and they have a guy doing something in the 14's. Don't get me
wrong. I'm not bitching about it. They are all very nice rides. But if
you are going to make yourself look like an elite club with all these
minimum requierments, shouldn't they be across the board rules?

Actually, this is just the green envy in me coming out.

Some of those cars 14 sec cars have been in the club since before the 13 sec
rules. You could say they were kinda "grandfathered" in. Besides, all those
guys are working on better combos to get deep in the 13s. As far as the
"Elite" comment, once you meet most of those guys you realize that they are not
eliteist at all. Most of the people who are offended by the rules have never
met the people behind the club. Its a good bunch of guys. Besides, whats the
point of having a club without some sort of bylines to form some sort of
individuality.

Well said, CORNpanzer. The DKP III guys are some of the friendliest,
down-to-earth guys out there. They love their cars, and why shouldn't they?
Eliteist? Not hardly. They will answer anybody's questions, at any time, even
stupid ones asked by a magazine guy.....

The grammar and spelling mistakes by native English speakers in various
message boards and discussion forums are also something that never ceases to
amaze. Especially in the Cal Look or should I say CAPS LOCK FORUM :-)

Ya know Tero,

I just got rid of the "accidental Caps Lock" problem by yanking the
whole damn Caps Lock key off my keyboard. Who needs it anyway. If I need
to hit the caps lock key, I can poke the contact inside with a pencil.

Am I great or what. :-)

At school we used to screw up some keyboards by switching the keys
around slightly: when you tried to hit "D" you would get an "S" instead
on your screen... hehehehehe

I don't know how to put it but somehow the "DKP fans" piss me off..

I really like the DKP cars and the club is doing great thing in (global) Cal
Look Scene. I don't know any DKP members personally, I have emailed with
couple of them and they have been very helpful and friendly.

It feels quite strange that people are kissing DKP ass in various discussion
forums (especially in the Cal Look Forum) with stupid messages like ("oh I
just surfed to DKP site and boy are these cars cool..", "I wish I could join
etc", "oh, they are the elite"). Why can't these "fans" get a life, buy or
built a Cal Look car and do your own thing.

Does anyone who is close to the club know how the club members deal with
becoming "VW-celebrities"? Magazines like Volksworld have created such a
hype around the club in Europe.

I wonder when someone starts to sell counterfeit WCA (http://come.to/wca)
stickers :-)

Brief history lesson to Jan: WCA was formed 10 years ago because FVWA sucked
so much. And about the stickers; in Bug Run couple of the finnish guys
looked at your ride and asked me "you seem to know this guy, what the f***
is RANUA?".

I think that there is too much bull about the DKP stickers, I hope that
someday my VW would be running so well and looking sharp ("sano streeter" in
Hot VWs speak?) that my biggest worry would be counterfeit stickers :-)

Tero
ps. I didn't set any organization info to my Outlook Express. Check out what
news.inet.fi sets as my organization when I am posting, hehehe..

Truth be told, I'm not an active member. I pay my annual membership, and
get the magazine.
Woohoo. I don't have time to go to any of their meetings either. (Never
been to the Pälkäne main event, although I've been a member since maybe
93?)

Heh.. "RANUA" is a town in Finland.. :-)

Not many people in Finland know about this newsgroup. I have almost zero
contact to other VW enthusiasts in my own country! I know some of them,
but don't make it my life goal to poke my nose into other people's
business.. I have no time to socialize. While you guys get together at
shows and shiet, I'm in the garage busting my knuckles with my project
cars.

I have ramva stickers, and FVWA stickers were on the car when I bought
it. I'm not crazy about stickers. Still need to find a good spot for my
aircooled.net sticker though.

The other important part in this hobby besides the cars is the people, at
least for me. I have met so many cool people around this hobby I wouldn't
have met otherwise. Being compurer-nerd with quite modest mechanical skills
I wouldn't be able to much on my car without the help from others. I bought
my first Beetle some four years ago, most of the guys in the club have been
around with VWs over 10 years. I have learned so much from them.

Quite far from the original subject..

Well.. I'm one of those "over 10 years" folks.. got my first beetle
(1500) when I was 16 or 17. Did most of the maintenance on it long
before that too.. it was my mom's bug before she gave it to me. I'm 28
now. My mom had an oval when she met dad, dad had an early 6v beetle
too. They got rid of them both, and I think thay bought another one..
but then they moved on to bigger cars. I was a wee baby when I started
my aircooled VW life. Yes, I did travel in the rear "luggage"
compartment!

I have met plenty of cool people too, in Finland, Norway, and several
from the US.. Hell I met my girlfriend (Florida) that way too,
KidGoddess who also hangs around in this group when she finds time. I
bought her an engine for her Baja bug as x-mas present! :-)

I have more VW friends outside of Finland than locally... locally I
mostly have what you'd call "VW customers", some of which eventually
become friends. (I think they just try to brown-nose me to lower my
already low prices... LOL :-)

"The People", this is so true. One of the reasons I like the local Hot Rod
club. Great folks and they really don't seem to care what you drive as long
as you enjoy cars. There's everything from a fully restored, but mostly
original 34 Chevrolet to a 00 GMC Pickup. Everyone has respect for the other
guys car and lots of ideas to help you along with finishing your car.
