The DFAV is designed for watercooled cars. The idle mixture screw is on the
opposite side as it is on the DFEV. That's about the only difference. If
you put an electric choke element on a DFAV you basically have a backwards
DFEV. You can use the DFAV on a VW but it will be VERY hard to adjust it
since the adjusment screw will be next to the fan shroud. Actually, I have
a DFAV on my Ghia.
The DFAV normally has a water heated choke element that connects to your
water coolant. When the coolant heats up, it heats up the element. The
DFEV's electric choke uses electricity to heat the element.
So to sum it up, the DFAV is more designed for normal engines while the DFEV
works best on aircooled engines. Other than that, they are identical.
Here's a tip for any of you with DFAV carbs on your VW engine. An easy way
to adjust it is to turn it around backwards and then adjust it. When you
are done, just turn it back around. You can't hook up the throttle cable
when it is on backwards, but you don't need while adjusting it.

They should have designed the choke like the one on my boat. An electric
solenoid operates the choke only needs electricity when starting up. Once
the choke isn't needed, it doesn't use any electricity.

I have noticed that DFEV and DFAV carbs get switched up quite a bit, even at
the factory or the suplier or whatever. I've got a DFEV with the screw in
the back, ande a DFAV with the screw in the front. How do I know? I'm only
guessing, but the big stamped imprint on the carb that says DFEV and DFAV
might have something to do with it. I know JC said that sometimes the DFEV
are marked DFAV, and I con only assume that the opposite is true as well.
