Is there any site that explains how to run an engine out of the car. I've
seen this at VW shows where people are trying to sell the engines. However,
I don't know the details on how to do the hookups. I'm just about done
rebuilding my Ghia's engine and would like to try it.

TIA

there is a company that was selling out of car starter kits. i can't
remember the name. but my friend uses an old tranny case with a starter in it
to test engines. he says it works well.

The main thing you'll need is a way to attach the starter to the engine. I have
a bellhousing cut off of an old tranny that I use for this. You'll need a
battery and 2 cables, one to the post on the starter and one to the case. Then
you'll (at minimum) need to run a +12v wire to the positive side of the coil,
and a gas line from the fuel pump to a gas can. Short across the solenoid to
activate the starter and you're off and running.

I have a more sophisticated setup that has ignition on/off, starter button, oil
and generator warning lights, etc. Makes it really nice to test the engine and
charging system before you install it. Costs just a few bucks to set up and is
well worth it.

bench testing is a great idea. I test every engine we build, and sometimes
find problems and can repair them and tune the engine before installation.

I have used a bus bellhousing section for this, as it unbolts from the trans
housing and is simple, fast and neat.

I have an IRS tranny bolted under my workbench, and at the "face" of the
workbench are recessed 1) oil pressure gauge 2) main power switch 3)
start button 4) oil pressure warning light and I have athermometer I
use with the setup that measures temps from the dipstick hole.

I prefer an electric fuel pump with the fuel supply at a good distance from
the engine. I check the mechanical pump after the engine is primed and
already run. A fire extinquisher is manditory.

Try hitting a local scrap yard for a bellhousing. You could easily find
old vw scrap there all the time. Great place to get small quanties of
sheet stock too. And usually cheaper than new stuff.

Thanks to all who responded. I have a spare tranny I'll be putting the
starter on.

I was concerned with the "wiring" setup.
