I can't find my Haynes book and am having a problem finding where the
starter motor is on my 1972 type 1 VW Beetle. I had an AA guy out the
other day who hit it with a big spanner to get it turning over... I
tried the same trick by having a bit of a knock around... didn't work,
needless to say. If anyone can help me to find it of has a diagram it
would be a great help....
Having said this it may not be this at all. when I try to turn it
over the oil and generator lights come on and there is a click, but
the engin doesn't turn over or anything. Well what do you think??

It's up over the left rear wheel.

If whacking it doesn't help <g>, try this:
Shift in NEUTRAL!
Get underneath with a short wire or even a screwdriver.
Jumper the large battery cable post on the starter solenoid
to the small push-on connector on the solenoid.
If it now cranks over, the starter is OK and the problem
lies in the wiring or (more likely) the Ignition switch.

Don't park over mud puddles. That's what really does it.
Bussy always used to pull this trick when I parked him in a
really sloppy place so I'd have to get wet and muddy sliding
underneath to do the trick Speedy Jim mentioned. I found a
source for just the solenoids and have saved a bunch of $$
since. Used to be I could get just over a year out of a
Bosche rebuild before the solenoid went out (1 year
warranty) The starter was never a problem - always the
solenoid (I DID have some ignition switch probs and I fixed
all those). I while back when I had the engine out, I wired
a heavy duty marine starter switch from the solenoid back to
the engine compartment. Now when I have the prob (which is
usually on HOT days with the engine HOT) I just walk around
back and push the button. Also helps when adjusting ignition
points.

Mine does that when the battery is not absolutely fully charged. I
have a weak circuit somewhere. Put a charger on it, or jump start. If
that works, then investigate the circuits. Don't go smacking your
starter. if you don't know exactly where it is, you might get lucky
and knock some wires loose.
