I have found some dual double barrel solex carbs, and was wondering if
anybody has had experience with them. I have a 1600cc dual overhead port,
brand new engine, and am running an original carb (solex 34 pict single
barrel, restored by myself). I am looking for some get up and go, and was
wondering if this is a path to take? These carbs are selling in JC Whitney
for $380, and I haven't had good experience with service from these guys, so
I am looking in other catalogs for the same setup, complete kit with intake
manifolds and all. I would like to get Webers, but don't have the budget
for those. Any comments, suggestions, etc. on size and brand of carbs would
be appreciated. Thanks!

Except that you describe them as being double-barrel, they sound like
Kadrons. K-dogs are 40mm Solex but are single-throat. If that's what
you have, they can work very well with a 1600. It's not a great
picture, but do they look like this?

Dan, those are single-barrel carbs, not dual barrel.

Stock Kadrons will run fine on a 1600DP motor. Any larger and they need
jetting.

Sam

P.S.- They're not Solex Kadrons anymore, they're Brosol, made in Brazil.

There are dual throat Solex Downdrafts too (and they are *not* Kadrons).
They are called 40-P11-4's ("forty pee eleven fours"). I have a set that I
run on my Bounty Hunter Dune Buggy
<http://home.sprynet.com/~ppollard/Front%20view.jpg>.

The 40-P11-4's have 40mm throats, 4 of them. They look *very* similar to a
Weber and they work *GREAT*. I wouldn't think of trading mine for any other
make of carb. They are great carburetors *except* for the limited
availability of throttle linkage. I had a home built linkage set-up on the
car when I first got it but later found a professionally built linkage
assembly so they are out there.

The 40-P11-4's were used on the Porsche 912's and (I *think*) on the late
model 356's.

There are two models of them. The 40-P11's and the 40-P11-4's. The "-4's"
are the later model carbs. and have a externally adjustable float.

Yes, I have a ton of experience with them. See my post attached to Jan
Andersons post farther into this thread re: Solex 40-P11-4 Dual Throat
Downdraft carburetors.

Absolutely. These carbs were used on the 912 (4 cyl.) Porsche and the 356 (4
cyl) Porsche so they were designed for good streetability on a air cooled 4
cyl. engine. They work *great* on my VW based engine.

I have a set of Gene Berg intake manifolds for my Solex Dual Throats so you
might check with GB to see if they still make them.

I would *love* to have another set and I'm really wondering if the carbs you
found are 40-P11's or not. Do you have a URL that shows them or describes
them or did you find them in a catalog? If you found them in a catalog can
you tell me what issue it is so I can contact JC Whitney and see if I can
get it?

Thank you,

I hope you made a *big* bundle on them, Sam. I say that because I have been
seeing *rebuildable* (not rebuilt or new) sets of 40P11 & 40P11-4's selling
for $900-$1000 a pair, when I do see them for sale. Not just *asking*
$900-$1000 a pair but *selling* for that $900-$1000 a pair!

And that's for the single shaft models too, not the split shaft models like
I have (it allows you to synchronize each of the 4 bbls separately).

As much as I like my Dual Throat Solex 40P11-4 carbs, I'm almost tempted to
find someone who needs a set and trade him/her for a nice new set of Webers
or something similar, with a good linkage set-up.

I say "tempted"... not seriously thinking about it at this point.

Is there a book or instruction sheet or a really good diagram of the
Solex 40-P11-4 carburetors available? Thanks in advance, Tracy

Can you be more specific? I looked but I can't find anything on the 40P11's
or the 40P11-4's.

And I sure would like a exploded view of one/them. Particularly the split
shaft style like what came on the 912's.
