Pardon my ignorance...

The upper right ball joint is loose. Is this dangerous like the lower one
being loose or can I drive it for a while longer? The joint is bad but I'm
not sure if I am going to have the time or $$ to fix it in the next week or
two and it is my daily driver. I suspect it has been bad for a while based
on various symptoms but I did not figure it out until today. Please...I
need guidance ASAP!

Considering the way civil liability laws work, I wouldn't attempt to touch
this question with a 10 foot pole. How could you expect anyone to answer a
question like this without seeing the car? My advise is, get some
professional advise.

I promise, cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye that I will
not sue you if your advice/info is wrong...but I may sue you for being a
butthead...

Oh come on, Oldman...you've got to be kidding...I'm just looking for
someone's experiences out there. Besides, among all of us amatures there
are some professionals out there. And yes, I am calling my mechanic (a
professional) this morning...he was closed my the time I discovered the
problem yesterday.

For christsake, if all of RAMVA hid behind "liability laws" this group would
be pointless because 90% of the traffic deals with advice, much of it safety
related...it's inherent in the hobby of old cars...

***End of rant***

Once again...does anyone have any experience with an upper ball joint coming
loose...i.e. do you know anyone who's wheel has fallen off due to
this...I've seen several posts regarding this happening due to the lower
ball joint.

Also, do I need a press if I just want to swap out the arm with another car?
I've got a '74 pan just sitting there and everything looks to be in order.

Thanks again, RAMVA...y'all are great!

WHERE is it loose? Is the ball loose in it's socket? Is the adjuster
loose in the knuckle? Is the stud loose in the adjuster? Yada yada yada.

Less dangerous than the lower, but still dangerous. Get all 4 done at once.

It is loose in its socket...I am having it (and probably the lower one too)

don't want to plunk too much $$ into this one...it has seen better

I admit Cosmobug, my response was overkill but it's the way the world
currently works. You get advise and then go out and get yourself or someone
killed. Then your mommy, daddy, or wifey decides they want revenge, money,
or the horror never to happen again. They talk to an attorney and his eyes
light up because he just bought a car and someone has to pay for it.

Wake up Cosmobug. You live in a world where someone collected a million
bucks because they spilled hot coffee in their lap. Why do you think that
warning is printed on your coffee cup you get from McDonalds. It's there
because someone spilled hot coffee in their lap. It's not there because
some fool should of known better.

Oddly enough, I was just listening to the soliloquy from Man of La
Mancha.

End of rant? Hardly.

We all have a choice of how to live our lives. I prefer not to let the
lawyers make mine for me. I was raised to help people when I could.
That includes providing any useful advice I may have when asked. No
different from holding the door for someone with an armload of
groceries.

You live the way you want. I will make my own choices.

Besides, is there really any certain way to protect yourself against
litigation? Do you really think the warning on the McDonalds coffee
cup does that for them?

Yahoo, Max!

Anyway, Oldman, I realize how f(*&ed up some parts of life are and I don't
really blame you for wanting to take that stance (its pretty sad, really,
but I think I would not mind trading burnt nads for a lot of money,
hehehe...ok, maybe not...ugh)....I just think that most here would agree
that it is not in keeping with the spirit of RAMVA to not give out "advice"
because of fear of getting sued. However, all it takes is that one ass to
ruit it for all of us. I'm still a relative newbie (~1.5 yrs) here but I
think I have gauged the group as whole properly regarding this.

I think Max captured my thoughts perfectly (leave it to those who are
more...err...mature...to word things well ;-). Hooray for free speech! No
intention of mine to offend or start a flame war (I like this community too
much)...though a philosophical discussion is certainly not out of the
question :-).

Anyway, hopefully I'll be driving safe and sound tomorrow..til something
else breaks...ahhh, the joys of owning a dub!

Please don't take it personal Cosmo. 20+ years I worked in the legal
system. I use to think the system was messed up. It's nothing in
comparison to the civil system. I've been sued a number of times because
some scum bag didn't like the fact that I didn't like the fact that his
antisocial ways were unacceptable. Fortunately, I was protected by a team
of good attorneys (which by the way, were paid by the good citizens of my
city).

Protect yourself. Noone else will provide that protection. We live in a
time of misplaced gas tanks, defective tires, spilled coffee, and Agent
Orange. You can bet your bottom dollar that someone would be willing to sue
you for that bottom dollar.

Liability aside, It would be irresponsible for anyone on a newsgroup to tell
you it is ok or safe to drive with a known bad balljoint. Only you or your
mechanic can make that judgment, since you are the only ones that can
visually inspect it.

................I would try to avoid high speeds, hard cornering and
pot-holes until they can be fixed (soon?). Also, if your going to a shop to
get them replaced, make sure that they know how to obtain good quality
ball-joints. If there's any question about that, see if they'll let you
provide some good ones from www.aircooled.net or some other reliable source.

Oh, I agree and I should have phrased the question better...

Though the point is moot now, I guess I was just looking for peoples'
experiences. When I did a search I ran across several posts that had
related stories of the lower joint letting go and dropping the car to the
ground...I was curious to see if anyone else had had similar experiences
with the upper joint or does it stay in place because of the weight of the
car...of course, unloading that corner severely could result in separation,
I suppose. Whatever...its getting fixed today...

And to Tim Rogers' post, my mechanic uses only the best parts...he and his
family have been in this biz for many years and know what's up...thanks for
the heads up, though!

I would have to guess Law Enforcement. In 14 years I've been sued 4 times
for over 18 Million Dollars. Never went to court, and all were dropped after
deposition.

If a cop doesn't get sued, at least a couple of times in a career, then he's
not doing his job.

I am alive and well, thank you very much...and I don't need a
layer...err...lawyer. Sorry ANT, but my collection stays here...I did reply
to your post...just not in the same thread...take a look at an earlier
thread. Or if you must know, it was loose in all sorts of ways...up/down,
side-to-side...wasn't quite at the stage of letting go but who knows how
much longer it would have lasted.

I got it fixed yesterday. It was rusted and beat all to hell inside...not a
bit of shiny metal to be seen. And I thought the squeak was coming from the
torsion tube. It is much nicer now. Now to replace the rest of the
assy...right now it ain't too bad...body work and parts are the priority
unless another lets go. My mechanic said all the rest looks pretty good.

Thanks for your vulturing...err...concern.
