I'm a couple of nuts & bolts away of having my Ghia engine rebuilt from
'scratch'. When I got the engine it had no wiring on it! Without putting
into the car, I'd like to test it. Can any one describe or give my a site
which has diagrams, etc., that shows how to wire the engine. I need to know
how to wire the starter, ignition coil, distributor condenser, generator and
battery ( and anything else necessary). I have a spare tranny I'll mount
this engine on, so the starter hookup shouldn't be a problem.

TIA,
Mel P.

Bench testing is easy. Hookup your spare trans axle, hook up the
battery ground to the trans axle, hookup the battery positive to the
starter, run a hot wire from the #15 (+) terminal on the coil to the
positive battery post (hook it up WHEN you are ready to start the
motor), hookup the dizzy to the other side of the coil, last hookup a
wire to the spade terminal on the starter.

Now to start the motor on the bench (or floor), hookup the wire from
the coil to the positive battery terminal, then touch the wire from
the spade terminal on the starter to the positive battery terminal to
turn the motor over. Once the motor starts, to cut the motor off just
remove the wire from the coil to the battery.

NOTE: If the carb has a cutout switch on it you will need to run a
wire from the #15 terminal of the coil to the cutout switch and the
elec. choke coil.

For bench testing you do not need to hookup the wiring for the
alt./gen.. Just the v-belt to turn the cooling fan.

To simply start the engine on the bench,

1. Attach + side of battery to threaded stud on starter and neg side to
any nut on the tranny.

2. Run a wire from the battery + or starter stud to the + terminal of
the coil.

3. Run a split wire from the + terminal of the coil the the choke and
cutoff switch on the carb (single carb, right?). Make this wire nice
since it will be permanent ;)

4. The condenser wire goes to the neg terminal on the coil.

5. To start: briefly cross the starter stud with one of the adjacent
terminal(s) next to it on the starter solenoid. I use a screwdriver.

Hope this helps

Go to my site and check out the engine photos, I have my engine running in
my yard. Check out the light I used to check the oil pressure.
