Has anybody ever had or known anybody riding around with a 205/70 r15 on stock
4.5 rim?The tire is rated to fit from a 5 inch to 7 inch rim.

Not a good idea at all, makes for a very unstable tire, unless you drive
like a granny that is. :0]

I had 215/75X15 on 4.5" rims. They were not stock rims thoug, the offset was
different. This was on my baja. I have now gone to 6" rims with 27/9.5x15 which
are close in size to the 215's. it does drive quite a bit better now with the
wider rims.
Unless this is for a baja or buggy, its probably not a great idea to use
them, but they will squeze on there.

I've been trying to find used tires to replace the bias-ply's on my 65....I
found two 205-75-15's that are in good shape. Tirerack.com says 205-75's are
good for 5-6.5" rims....I figure they'll be fine on a 4.5" rim. Plus...they are
27.1 inches tall...my current tires are 26.9 on the rear, so I should be ok.
I'm trying to find a good set of 165's for the front....

My local tire shops would not mount 185/65/15 on stock 4.5" rims for me,
saying it was illegal and they don't want to be responsible for any
acccidents it would cause. I knew the guys, and I am a good customer, so
I finally did manage to persuade them to mount the tires after I
promised I would never hold them responsible and would not tell anyone
THEY did the work.

If my combo was illegal aready, yours would be insane. (or impossible).
Would not be safe, and does not perform well either. For me it was a
temporary solution until I got wider tires (they were out of stock).

way too wide.

My tire shop said that a 195x15 would be the widest tire to go on my 15x5.5
empi repro's

besides it would look real odd...

Here's my Combination on my 67' T-1. 195/50-15" Pirelli's on the Front 4.5"
wheels. In the rear I am running 205/60-15" Yokohama's on 5.5" chromies. The
205/60 rear tires are a smaller overall diameter than the OEM 165's the VW came
with (My mistake). As a result my engine is now about 3400 RPM at 65-69 MPH.
With my 195/50 tires on the front I have to use the roadside radar posts to
establish my speed. My speedometer reads 75 MPH which I know is way off.
On a 4.5" Stock wheel I have seen 205/60-15" mounted but that is the max for
that wheel. The sidewall is way out past the fenders. a 195/65-15" Would be the
biggest that I think will look right & not cause fitting problems.

they will fit fine, the 70 series is tall enough that it would distribute
the tire and be safe enought . although a 75 series would be better . i have
used 195 /60 , and i think that is streatching it worse then a 205 /70.

and i have used 205 /65 (pushing it) , and 205 /75. and never have a
problem.
