I'm not aware of any VW clubs in my neck-o-da-woods, so I'm thinking about
starting one up. Being new in the club organization business, I'm looking
for tips to help me along.

I'm located along the Colorado River in Western Arizona, and was thinking of
the name:

Western Arizona Volkswagen Enthusiasts. (W.A.V.E.)

Does anyone know of any conflicts with this name?

I'll be looking for potential members from:

Yuma, Az
Blythe, Ca
Parker, Az
Quartzsite, Az
Lake Havasu City, Az
Needles, Ca
Bullhead City, Az
Laughlin, Nv
All other towns in the area.

There's mostly Bajas and buggies out here, but I also see quite a few
classics and customs, Buses, Ghias and Type IIIs, too.

If anyone has hints or friends in the area(s) who may be interested, please
post here or email.

Thanks

Start out will a place to meet(remember parking). You can place bulletins in VW
parts stores and repair shops. start slow and get the intrest, set the meetings
once a month say on every 3rd saturday night and have fun.>>

Hi Alan,
Rare Air started meeting as a Club about 5 years ago with about 10
members. Today Rare Air has about 91. I have read back though our
archives and discovered that Bulletins and flyers stuck under
windshields of every VW that you saw parked somewhere and ( as
perviously mentioned) parts stores. This helps to get the word out.
Another thing that you can do is see if a parts store will sponsor a
show and shine in front of his establishment. Advertise in the local
paper or get a local radio station to make a PSA. You will be
surprised at how fast and how many VW enthusiast will come out to show
off their vehicles. Getting VW people does a lot of different things
but the most positive is the sharing of info, buying , selling and
trading parts and technical info and just enjoying the idea of keeping
these great vehicles on the highway .
Try and get Kathy Jacobs to give you some tips . She has started
or help started several clubs in the Southeastern
VW Community and is very helpful and knowledgeable. Best of luck and
keep us posted.

This past fall I started a Club (Aurora Air-cooled Club of Alaska, AACoA),
so I know what it takes to get one going. It all started at a car show. I
am a member of the Midnight Sun Street Rod Association, obviously a street
rod club, and was attending their big show in August. The show had 260+
cars enter the show. Of these there were about 5 Bugs, 3 Ghias and a 21
window Bus. I parted my '65RHD next to a '63 ragtop and a '60 Ghia (both
who are in the street rod club also) and started talking about how we never
have a chance at any trophies since there are no categories that really fit
our cars.

LOTS of people started stopping by looking at our cars and of coarse sharing
their experiences with VW's. So I started asking those that had VW's if
they would be interested in joining a Club if there was one in town. That
day we took down 12 names, email addresses and phone numbers. Next I
printed out some flyers and pinned them up at VW related repair shops,
dealerships, etc. We also would place a flyer under ANY air-cooled VW's we
saw on the street or in parking lots (driveways too). I even chased a few
people down on the highway and handed them flyers. At our first meeting we
have 8 people and 6 vehicles show up. We established who was the Secretary,
Treasurer, Chairmen, etc.

Now, about 4 months later we have 30+ members with more coming along all the
time. I am afraid to say but I may have created a monster! Having never
done anything like this before it is off to a rough start, but I think we'll
smooth it out and have a great Club.

Bottom line.....get out there and talk to people and print some flyers and
get those out there. It's amazing how fast things get around word-of-mouth.
Good Luck!

This is definatly good advice.

I'd also add another option. Our club doesn't have officers or dues
and is built for fun only. We meet at Sonic for our "meetings". We
send out a newsletter that we were able to do by getting sponsers or
donations from businesses. We put a business card size ad in the
newsletter in exchange for those that want to go that route.

There are other clubs that run in this same manner and they all seem
to do very well. It seems like more and more of the "new" clubs are
doing things this way. It's all about the VW's. Here's our club
website (which is a little out of date) and another for an Austin club
that is run the same way.

All that is mentioned here is great advice!
I started South Eastern VW Club in 1994 with only the intention of us around
my parts to get together. But something happened in the Surrounding areas
and low and behold they all wanted in on it too!
I did the same thing, placed a local ad in the paper and started from
there. We really had it going here in South Ga for awhile. It was almost to
the point that we were going to dispan, due to lack of VW's, but we stuck it
out and here we are today with 320 members strong across the southeast. We
have 8 chapters in 3 states(didn't Plan that) and each chapter has their own
issues(believe me!), meets and even shows. Some have a board of directors,
while others just meet and go from there.
Believe me, it will take dedicated time from yourself and if you are
lucky you might have a few friends volunteer with it too.
All this is well worth it too, as you will always have someone to call on
if something goes wrong with your VW and of course lots of VW friends to go
to shows with or just hang out.
If you have any other questions, I would be glad to answer them!
Good Luck!

Man, talk about lost in time. Your 59 page is very good! I have just spent
the last two hours reading about your adventure. Great Job on the
restoration, I know you are proud of the results.

If anyone needs some motivation, you need to check this out!

Ahhh, bummer, now it is back to work...........8~( 8~)

Naahh every time I look at that website I am motivated but I end up spending
all the time I should be working admiring Johns bugs. (hows that for a
run-on sentance)
