I lowered the front end of my car 2 1/2 in. by way of dropped
spindles. The tires I currently use are 195/60R15. They are perfect
when there is only one person in the car. However when carrying
passengers they rub the fenders when stopping or making a hard corner.
I am considering changing to 195/50R15 in hopes that they will solve
my dilemma. I know I could put the 145 or 135/15's on, but I think
they are ugly as hell with my 5 1/2 in. wide wheels.

The question I have for everyone is about the 195/50R15's.....Has
anyone had any experience with them. I've seen that size tire on many
cars at shows, but I know that most of those cars are rarely driven,
so it wouldn't matter much if they rubbed or not. Anyways, please
post your comments or sugguestions or email me .....

Hi I had the same problem with 165's and dropped spindles. First of all I
screwed up by getting dropped spindles that pushed the wheel out 1/4" on
each side. Claudes make a set that don't do that. But one thing that did
help was a set of KYB gas adjust shocks. It don't rub with them on. So far
this is with a passenger. I am going to wider fenders so that will end the
problem but the KYB's did help and I like the ride and handling.

your problem is not the height of the tire it is the width, the lower you
go with a bug the narrower the tire you need. I have lowered many a bug
and even with my current setup 135/15 with the front wheels tucked in the
fender they still rub on the in side. The fender area just isn't that
wide.

Changing to a 195/50 would be a waste of money. Think about it, both tires
(195/60-195/50) are the same width. They will still rub. The way I see it
you have three options:
1. Change to those "ugly" old school 135's.
2. Get widened fenders, or
3. Narrow the front beam by 3".
The last one involves a lot of work. Trust me.

more tire clearance on squareback than a beetle.

Your tyres may not rub, but I bet the front beam mounts do. Get rid
of it before you grind them right off and have to replace the
frame-head!

I had this problem and noticed my mom's Escort GT had 185 60r15.
Tried her old set and they worked like a charm.

Don't have these so can't speak from experience but several after market wheel
& tyre suppliers here in the uk sell wheels complete with 185/65/15's tyres
fitted. Don't spose they could get away with it if they didn't fit.
