WBeckerman says 67 for US cars.

My 70 (Australian/European spec) has the metal dash,
and the other day I saw a 73 1300 (yes 1300 - Aussie
spec remember) with a metal dash.

Any advance on 73 anyone?

Lot of people don't realize that under that 68 up rubber pad is a metal dash,
and I haev seen plenty of people who have removed their dash pad and left the
metal exposed.

My -74 1300 had a metal dash. All european std (as in not super) had
metal dashes. (I think). The -70 1500 beetle had a padded dash, I owned
one of those too (it was my first beetle).
I have rarely seen padded dashes on any other beetles than supers.
You could install the padded dash afterwards, but you need the taller
dash knobs to go with it. (My 1500 was factory fitted with all the
correct knobs).

a dash that has padding around a (metal?) dash.

We are talking about the dash being exposed (painted) metal,
as oppposed to the plastic dash which (naturally) attaches to
the metal behind.

The US got the plastic dash before Europe and Australia. We
(in Aus) have 73s (and maybe even later) with the old style plain
metal dash.

My definition of metal dash: NO padding anywhere. Everything just plain
metal.
The padded dash I had on my 1500 had the normal metal inserts on both
sides of the speedo, and the glovebox cover was the normal metal one,
with the car's own color.

The only other type of padding I know of is the one they used on Curved
widshield Supers. Totally different.

Is there a problem with removing the padding and leaving the metal it?

I did this on a '77 standard bug, filled in the holes with sheet metal
and body filler, and painted the dash the same color as the rest of the
body. I also smoothed over the ash tray opening, speaker grille, and
the other little grille to the right of the speedometer.
