So does anybody have any manuals to recommend (that are less than a
quarter-century old) for building a modified VW motor?
FWIW,
"How To Hot Rod VW Engines" is a collectible. You may wish you still had
a copy some day...

I bought that book right after I bought my first bug, a brand new '72
super. Remember, the bugs most people want to work on were probably
made between 67 and 72 so what's wrong with a book that was published
in '70? It is one of the favorites in my collection.

Pete,
You might want to check out Gene Berg's technical articles (cost around
$27 for the full set and covers engine/transmission/suspension). I
haven't yet purchased a set, but they appear to come highly recommended
among the "do it right" crowd.
If you don't yet have the Berg catalog and you're building a HP
motor--get one!!

True, it's old, but much of what it has to say is still valid. The
ratio of reality to hype is infinitely better than almost anything
else you can get hold of today. I think of it as a primer for
understanding the Berg catalog.
If you read it carefully it can same you lots of money that you might
otherwise be tempted to spend on snake oil. Go back with your hat in
your hands and buy it.

Whereas I, who bought a 1973 copy for a dollar, am tickled pink to hear
that it isn't obsolete :)

I just got this month's copy of "Volksworld" magazine here in the U.K.
and the former editor Keith Seume has just written a book called
"Aircooled VW Engine Interchange Manual"
Should be a good buy considering he really knows his stuff!

I'd like to know as well. One question: Is that not the most dry and
boring title anyone ever could have dreamed up for a book???????
Check out the november issue of 'VolksWorld' it's all there
together with a bunch of other publications. (there's also
an order form)
The price for the book is 12.95 GBP (approx $20)
