I am building a rail frame buggy, starting with rebuilding an engine
this winter. I went to the local bookstore and special-ordered "How to
Hot Rod Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engines" from HP books. Imagine my shock
when I picked it up and found the copyright date to be 1970! It had
statements like "Fuel Injection should be available on new Beetles by
1975." A lot of the parts the book mentioned were EMPI. Good Grief! I
returned the book, of course. The bookstore was just as shocked to find
a book in print so obviously out-of-date, and willing took it back.
They even attemped to find a VW motor book that was more current, but
could not. Hisses and boos to HP books (which I used to be very pleased
with.)

So does anybody have any manuals to recommend (that are less than a
quarter-century old) for building a modified VW motor?

FWIW,

"How To Hot Rod VW Engines" is a collectible. You may wish you still had
a copy some day...

I bought that book right after I bought my first bug, a brand new '72
super. Remember, the bugs most people want to work on were probably
made between 67 and 72 so what's wrong with a book that was published
in '70? It is one of the favorites in my collection.

Maybe so, but there is a lot of good stuff in there. As far as I'm
concerned, it is still the best single VW book and belongs on every shelf.
Sure, a lot of things have changed, but the fundamentals have not. By all
means get some more current stuff, but don't let that valuable classic get
away!

Pete,

You might want to check out Gene Berg's technical articles (cost around
$27 for the full set and covers engine/transmission/suspension). I
haven't yet purchased a set, but they appear to come highly recommended
among the "do it right" crowd.

If you don't yet have the Berg catalog and you're building a HP
motor--get one!!

Check out "All About VW Performance Engines" which is essentially a
collection of articles about various custom engines and options. It's
put together by Hot VWs magazine. The publishing date is 1989. The
phone number listed in the front is 714-979-2560.

True, it's old, but much of what it has to say is still valid. The
ratio of reality to hype is infinitely better than almost anything
else you can get hold of today. I think of it as a primer for
understanding the Berg catalog.

If you read it carefully it can same you lots of money that you might
otherwise be tempted to spend on snake oil. Go back with your hat in
your hands and buy it.

Okay, I get it. Everyone with experience with this book tells me it's a
landmark and still very valuable today. That's great news. I'm still
kind of disappointed in HP books for not updating it (even a little?)

Whereas I, who bought a 1973 copy for a dollar, am tickled pink to hear
that it isn't obsolete :)

I just got this month's copy of "Volksworld" magazine here in the U.K.
and the former editor Keith Seume has just written a book called
"Aircooled VW Engine Interchange Manual"

Should be a good buy considering he really knows his stuff!

I'd like to know as well. One question: Is that not the most dry and
boring title anyone ever could have dreamed up for a book???????
