I recently purchased an 1982 Vanagon and had a few questions.

1) There is absolutly no heat or defroster action up front, quite a bit
of hot air blows out of the vent on the floor behind the front seat, but
there doesn't seem to be a way of regulating it. What possible problems
do I have, I need the defroster as I live in the Philadelphia PA area.

2) There is a knob on the lower right of the dash board that says TEMP
with an arrow showwing a - and a +, what is it and what does it do?

3) Have no power going up hills, all cylinders are firing, does fine on
flats and has a new fuel filter. What gives?

4) Getting horrible gas milage, just had a tune up that made no difference.

Any answers or tips are welcome.

Yep! It sounds like you have an '82 Vanagon. :-)
Peace,

Sounds like the cables for the distribution box up front are not connected.
Remove the Glove Box, the ash tray and the heater/air vent control plate
and trace the cable to where they go from the control levers. Find the
ones that are not connected and reconnect them.

This is normal for a VW Van. Get used to it. Or have a Porsche engine
installed.

What kind of mileage are you getting?. 16 mpg for city driving is normal
while 22 mpg for the highway is also normal.

Assuming this hasn't been answered already ...
First, try visiting your friendly neighbourhood VW dealer & have them either
give you the grand tour of the thing, or sell you an owners manual.

Q.1 - My '78 had/has defrost problems, due to mice nesting in the ducts.
Clean 'em out! If for no other reason, mouse urine really stinks -- and
you'll have a defroster again.

2. It's your gas heater. Only works if the regular heater is already on.

3 & 4 -- Dunno. Good luck!

1) check the lever connections - or the lever positions for that matter!
pushing one of them all the way to the left causes airflow out the middle
floor vent - so perhaps a cable is broken and that is the 'relaxed'
position

2) that knob is the timer switch and thermostat setting for the auxiliary
gas heater. It's probably green colored? to the right of it and further
under the
dash is a tan box with some other relays - that is more of the same circuit.
anyway, the heater will be your friend - it makes these buses livable in
cold weather. it feeds off the gas tank though, and there have been reports of
fires from them - but i've never directly communicated with anyone who has
actually witnessed this. The timer is so you can warm up the bus in the
morning before you get it going. (Really, its in the owners manual)

3 & 4: lots of things are possible. I'd check valves and compression. if
they're all firing but you have no power that energy must be leaking out
somewhere!

good luck,
-rick
