Please help

I have a 1973 1300cc Beetle which collects water in the rear passenger
footwell during periods of prolonged rain. I have checked for leaks
underneath put can't see anything obvious. Is this a common problem?

Any suggestions ??

Cheers

Check for leaks--anywhere on the passenger side!! It could be from a leaking
door seal, to water geting in through the window scapper, running down the
plastic sheet inside the door and out into the car via holes that eventually
form in that plastic sheet...

Um, could be leaking windshield, running behind and down the tunnel to the
rear... Um, could be aleaking rear quarter window...

In other \words, it could be leaking from anywhere!! I have this problem on
both side, but much more severely on the drivers side... Water was entering my
car through ALL OF THE ABOVE and a few more (because it still gets a little wet
inside in heavy rain)...

Silicon caulking solved most of these. Not pretty, but my feet stay dry (or,
dryer...)!

You could always drill a small hole in the floor so all the water can drain
(make sure you rust proof the heck out of that hole or it will rust away the
floor panel very quickly!)

Just some ideas!

Check that paper tube in the trunk area. It's the one that drains water from
the defroster. Mine was starting to split and water was running down to the
little light that lights up your heater controls and parking brake. It mounts
to the underside of the dash. I had big puddles in mine. Another place is under
the rear seat next to the heater channels. My friend sais his rusted through
there and you couldn't tell from the outside because it had all the
undercoating on it. The undercoating cracked and let water in and it sat there
trapped and rusted it out. The rear tires splashed more on it and the saga
continues. Rust sux.

Some more ideas:

1.) The rear window seal (cracked)
2.) The inner side of the heater channel (rusted through)

To find the leak, try the following:

Dry out the footwell carefully. When it starts to rain the next time
while driving stop after a while and look for "streams" leading to the
footwell and follow them to the "fountains".

Have you checked you door seal rubber? Thats where snow piles up in one of
my '69s.

Got a friend that's a cigar smoker who doesnt mind laying on the ground
for a while? Pull the bottom of the rear seat and have him blow smoke
around the body to pan seal from the outside while your watching the
inside. Short of an obvious hole in the pan itself, I would think this
water gets there from the rear side of the pan...

My 63 was leaking in via a hole under the rear seat. Theres a complex
join where several pieces of metal come together. It first showed up
after a drive in heavy rain and got the seat belt wet. It sure was
smelly.

My first vw, a '68 beetle, had a hole that I found while driving through
a puddle. It was right around where the LF fender bolted on. The water
came up through the car and soaked my whole left leg.

I have seen this a LOT recently. One of the major causes of this is OLD
quarter window rubber. Sit in the back seat with a flashlight, and have a
friend spray water around the quarter windows, and scan carefully for
leaks. It usually takes a couple minutes before the water shows up, so be
patient. After that, they leak like a sieve.

Also check the REAR window rubber (have you checked the rear well carpet
to see if it is damp/wet?) and as others suggested, the floor. Finally,
any water entering the FRONT of the pan (drivers feet area and door
rubber) will run to the rear because of the slope.

My '66 was that way. I found a large hole in the front, right where my heel
goes on the gas pedal. Since it was under the tar board, it was hard to tell.
I tore the tar board out, patched up the hole and have never had the problem
again. It filled up the back because of the water flowing while I was driving.

Apparently this can happen in many different ways. Mine was coming
from the rear window seal, which was shot, and someone made a poor
attempt to repair it with some goop that got hard and brittle, makint
the problem even worse. I had water sloshing back and forth on the
passenger's side, nearly pouring onto the driver's side (and my toes!)
after one particularly rainy week end.

I would strongly suggest that you first check every window seal,
every door seal, window scrapers, etc., then start looking for rust
holes in or near your floor. If you still can't find the source, get a
freind to spray the car from all angles (even from under!) while you
search for seapage. A slow leak can allow a lot of water in given a
couple of days.

Hope this helps!!

I'm having the same problem in my 70 Beetle.I have pop-out quarter windows and
the seals are shot so water is leaking in and fulling up the rear floorpan.I
also keep getting water in the floorboard on the passenger side and finally
found out where it was coming from: THE GLOVE BOX!, so the hood seal is shot
also. Oh well I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend

I found that on my 65 the rear window rubber had gotten so old that it was
actually porous. It took a while for water to get through but it did and
seeped so gradual that it was hard to tell it was leaking.
