I just put in a rebuilt starter motor and solenoid. It just dawned on
me the other day that I did not put any grease on the little pinion
gear of the starter motor. Is this necessary?

It doesn't sound like a BAD idea, but I've never done it and I've
never seen a recommendation to do so.

If you do so, just use a tiny bit, so it doesn't get thrown onto the
clutch.

NONONO... when you fit your rebuilt starter you put in a new starter bush...
right??? The new starter bushes are made of a porous metallic substance. If
you sit it on top of you index finger, so you are blocking the bottom, fill
the top with engine oil. Then press you thumb onto the top - you'll see the
oil seep through and run out of it. Put it into the CLEAN hole, put a
*little* oil on the shaft and off you go!

Allan,
Its called sintered metal and sometimes "oilite bushings". However, some of
the starter motor bushings for the trans are solid metal and do require a
light dab of grease. The pinion gear on the starter operates dry.
