I am looking at an orginal 66 bug. It is rust free. The body is perfect. The
owner says the engine has a problem with the crank bearings. The engine is also
missing the heads. It is the orginal 1300. How hard would it be to rebuild this
engine? I have some mechanical experiance working on go karts. How much money
will it probably cost me? The car is only $250 but i dont know if i can fix the
engine. any help would be appreciated. i am in NJ. If anybody knows a good
rebuilder that will do it cheap or if anybody lives near me and could help me
out please let me know.Thanks a lot.

A rust-free '66 for $250 ??

Just grab it! Worry about an engine later.

Crank bearings could mean anything up to and including
needing line boring or case replacement.
So, hard to say how much.

If you have to, buy the car and put a temp engine in.

But buy it!

The thing is it is in CA and i have to ship it to NJ. So the price would be
around $800 total. Does anybody know somebody who has cheap ready-to-run
engines?Thanks

Thats still a decent deal, I paid 1700 for my rust free '66, the engine ran
great though, I'm not sure what they run. I would still say it is a steal
though.

With regrd to your recent VW newsgroup posting;

Grab this beauty and run with it. Body work is the hardest part in restoration;
engine work is a piece of cake. A VW engine is about as easy to work on as your
lawn mower. Parts for most of the engine types are still available (if you want
to rebuild the engine in this car) or you can buy a drop in, turnkey brand
spanking new motor from BeetleMex for about 1700 bucks plus shipping. If the
body is in as good a condition as you say and the person want's only 250 bucks
for it, then you've found yourself a real gem.
