You might want to consider having someone drive the car for you so you
can begin trying to roll the passenger window down and start
strengthening your right bicep. You don't want to end up looking funny.

Matt,

I had the same exact problem with my 92 SL1. It did it all the time,
not just in cold weather. The rain didn't make mine any easier to open
and the problem seemed unrelated entirely to weather. I got a "window
regulator" put in and now it's fine. I got an extended warranty for mine
though and it was covered. If you don't have a warranty, I'm not sure
exactly how much it would cost, but it has definitely solved the problem.
Makes going to the drive-up window or the toll booth lots easier!

Hi there.
I have the same problem on my 93 SC1. In the winter, it's a bear to roll
up or down. i haven't found a solution yet, just thought I'd let you
know you're not the only one out there with unbalanced biceps :^)

The windows on my 93 SL have this problem too. I think part of it happens
as the result of rolling the windows up too tightly (the cheap plastic
belt or whatever in the mechanism gets stretched and won't move freely;
the plastic parts also get hard and brittle in the winter).

Mine started slipping notches in the belt after less than one year of
use, and the problem eventually got so bad that the handle would just
freewheel loosely. I had it fixed under warranty and they replaced
the "regulator". They told me this would normally cost $170 for
parts and labor!

Unfortunately, the new part only lasted about a year and the driver's
side mechanism is slipping badly again. My factory warranty has
expired, and as a student, I can't afford the $170 to fix it again.
Meanwhile, it is not fun wondering whether I'll be able to get the
window back up after rolling it down. This problem, plus the
infamous water-dripping-into-the-car problem and the rattling of
the interior plastic, are the primary complaints I have about my
Saturn. It's not a *bad* car, but these little problems are
particularly annoying.

ps. I'm thinking of buying some time by swapping out the window mechanism
with parts from another door; has anyone tried this?

I have a '94 SC2 w/ manual windows, and I just had to have the window regulator
replaced for the same problem. Maybe you can get them to fix this as a "secret
warranty" problem, since a number of us are having it? Good luck!

I had the same problem with my 93 SL2. Unfortunately, it occurred at
a toll booth in a 35 degree rainstorm. Needless to say, I was not a
happy Saturn owner! However, when I took it into Saturn of Sterling
the next day, they fixed it FREE in just over an hour.

Just fixed my windows. It was condensation mixing with grease on the one
way mechanism of the window regulator. Cleaning all the grease out and
relubricating it fixed the problem. Only had a problem when temperature
was below freezing. I re-installed the regulator with bolts instead of
rivets. I spoke to a Saturn parts tech. the other day and he admitted
to seeing a tech bulletin on this problem.
Now if I could only get the electric seat belts to work when its cold...

Ken

P.S I first tried relubricatint the sliders and such with no effect. The
problem was entirely internal to the regulator but it comes apart easily
once you remove it. Recommend bolting it back together for the NEXT
time though....

We had that problem with our 94 SL; something inside eventually broke
and was replaced under warranty. It was happening again with the
replacements when our warranty was almost up; I think they lubed it
and now at 90,000 km the problem hasn't recurred...
