I use very agressive tread studded snow tires all the way around.
Previously used the same in front only, all seasons in rear. See the ditch
suction section of my site to see why not to do this. The rear broke away.
I have found that on snow and ice the Saturn is a very stable car.

Use the tire of your choice, but as with any front wheel drive, use the same
exact tire all the way around.

Spam doesn't bother me, I just delete it.
I work at a tire business.I have some post office employees trading with
me that use snow tires on the front of their vehicles in winter. They
work out great on their rural deliverys in the snow and mud. I have a two
wheel drive chev. pickup that I go down a muddy river levee and I run mud
grip tires on the front. You would really be suprised at the increase in
steering purformance this gives you.Traction tires on the front will not
hurt your vehicle. They may thro a little mud on the side of your car.

You should get snow tires all around, it will be much safer.
If you want to put only one set of snow tires, put them on the back.
You see, if traction is much better in front than in back, the back of your
car will lose grip easily in turns and you'll make some nices spins... Not
a very good idea in traffic.
The original Saturn tires are not very good in snow and ice, but with
good winter tires, My SL2 is very stable and grips well. I'd recommend
Nokian NRW tires. They're high performance winter tires (H rated, 130mph)
that are very good in snow with good grip on ice.
