I am considering replacing the stock base-level speakers in my 95 SL1.

The 95s have a different sized speaker slots from the earlier Saturns.

I checked w/ Crutchfield (and a local Best Buy) and found the only
readily available drop-ins seem to be the Pioneer TS-1620 II or the
TS-1688 II. These are basically the same but the 88 has better
materials and power capacity and costs almost twice as much. I could
try much smaller speakers 'though these are sized "6 1/2 S", according
to Crutchfield, and are the required fit for a 95 Saturn SLx.
Anything smaller seems to require an adapter kit.

Has anybody tried these or have any suggestions? I've read the FAQ
but it doesn't seem to address the 95s.

Crutchfield also offers a "Special Application" speaker that works
perfect in the 95's. I'm not sure of the model number, but it's the only
one they sell from Polk Audio. They are more expensive than the
Pioneers, but THEY SOUND GREAT!!

Just a note, too, that I tried the TS-1688 II and sent them back due too
terrible sound quality. My Alpine amp. was pushing them a little hard.
That's just my opinion.

Good Luck,
Karl

My suggestion would be to find some Polks 6 or 6 1/2's... I'm not sure
if they sell any 6 1/2 S. Find the model #, and look in the back of
like Car Audio or Car Stereo Review where all those mail order places
are. Order from them, and save about $20-40 per pair rather than
Crutchfield. Then take them to HiFi Buys or another reputable stereo
installation place, and see if they can order you some cut-outs.

Never underestimate the "power" of polks... whether they are in
cut-outs or not. ;)

I replaced the rear upgrade speakers with the TS-1688 IIs. They are
expensive, but I've been happy with them.
