I'm considering an SW1 or SW2. I'm looking for a 97-98. Haven't test driven
either yet, but I do have a few questions for present owners. Any insight
would be appreciated, especially from Canadian owners:

1. Whats the main diff between the 1 and 2?

2. Any "known" problems with these cars? recalls, etc?

3. What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any 'heads-up'.

The main differences between the 1 and 2 cars in general are
that the 2 cars have 24 more HP and 8 more pounds of
torque, better seats, and more agressive handling. For me,
to whom all these things are important, the 2 series is better.
OTOH, the ownership cost is a bit higher( insurance, gas, the
car itself ) so for someone more money concious the 1 series
may be the best bet.

No recalls that I know of. It's subject to saturn's gradually-improve-
over-the-years philosiohy, so it should be a little better than my '96.

It's a nice little car to economically and safely transport you and
your stuff, while not being deadly dull.

As a wagon, it's practically useless. From model year 1996 up, the design
incorporates a bar across the cargo area which remains in-place unless both
seats are down. This "feature" prevents you from loading a package greater
than a foot in height you wish to carry a passenger in the rear seat. The
bar interferes. This bar is also present in the LW1 and 2. This is the
sole reason why I sold my '98 and purchased a '95 SW2. The SW2 has a more
powerful, twin-cam engine where the SW1 has an 8-valve. Trim level is also
better. Painted bumpers are standard on the SW2. Alternators are a weak
spot. While I like Saturns, and am generally pleased with mine, I would
recommend a 4-door VW Golf. It's a hatchback, has large cargo capacity,
superb fit and finish, and comes in at slightly less $$ than an SW2.

I can't remember which model year has some nice engine refinements, '98 or
'99 - I probably wouldn't consider an older one unless it had some type of
mondo extended warranty...

I like 2's over 1's for reasons already posted. Just seems like a nicer car
too.

With 10K on the odometer on my 4+ month old '99 SW2, there are several nice
things. We liked the -2 better than the -1 because of interior trim and
power/acceleration. Also the vehicle is good on the highway [overall 30MPG
in mixed city/high speed with up to 40 on flat extended trip driving], is
comfortable, reliable [no warranty issues yet], and dealer service is, by
all accounts, at the top of the industry.

Go for it.

In Regard to question #2

I bought my 97 SW1 in August 97. Except for one thing,
I been pretty happy with it even though it doesn't
have any power to speak of. About that one thing
though, the window trim on the driver door came loose
and broke right before it went out of warranty. I
figured it was a one time event and I got it
warranty repaired.

I'm now on my third window trim. This time it's the rear
seat window on the passenger side. Saturn spends
milions & millions on advertising, and then they
want to squabble with me over a few bucks. This
problem started in warranty and Saturn doesn't
want to stand behind their product. So I hope
you consider this before you buy their
over-hyped product.
