I am a loyal Honda fan, but I'd take a Miata over a DelSlow any day.
The DelSols never did amount to much.

The delSol is a piss poor attempt to remake the CRX.The Miata is the way to
go if you want a nice little convertible. They are pretty sporty and handle
really well.

This topic has been clearly beaten to death over the last few years.
Whichever is best to get depends on your circumstances and what you
expect of a car.

>Looking to spend $10kCDN
$7.00 won't get you much <g>

There is one easy way to figure it out. The Miata is still in
production. <g> Then again I've had mine for over 10 years, had two
others during that time which friends liked enough that they offered
me more for them than they were worth. I will continue to have mine
for another 10 years down the road. I can't recall anyone with a Del
Sol that's still as happy after that many years as they were when they
got it. It's an addiction.

Handling is king with the miata, rear wheel drive, great gear box, lots of
upgrades.

What kind of response did you get when you posed this question to the Del

I doubt it did. For our amusement, please tell us the name of "the Del
Sol newsgroup." Thanks.

Hey, I love mine. It fits all the Civic parts, gets good gas, and the top
comes off.

Four years, and only one blown engine...

Well I still my DelSol SI which I bought Labor Day weekend in 1992. I still
like it. Gets 36 mpg which is better than you will get with any Miata. It
did have more power than the Miata and would beat it in straigt line
accelleration but the Miata will beat the Del Sol on a road corse. They
handel really well. Now as for a convertible, the Miata would be my choice
as the Del Sol does not gives the same degree of "wind in the hair" feel.

Haven't drove either, but heard lots of good things about the Miata and
none about the Del Sol.

If your able to scrounge up several more thousands, a 91 MR2 would be
sweet.

There seem to be lots of answers here telling you what is best for you.
I've driven my DelSol VTEC for several years now, and owned an S model
for a while before that. I like it. And yes, I test drove a Miata
before buying it, and I liked it pretty well too.

But for me, the DelSol made more sense... seemed a bit more practical
while still being a bit sporty. I happened to get mine with low miles
and could talk to the only previous owner, so that I was pretty sure it
hadn't been beat to crap by someone that thought they were driving in a
race full time. I should note here too that I'm probably older than 99%
of the people reading/posting this group, in case that matters.

I'd say you need to go test drive them both and see what you think. The
mileage will be close enough to not matter too much unless you are
driving 100K a year, they both have enough power but neither is an Indy
race car, and the Sol is not really a full convertable, which suits me
fine.

I think you should drive what you like and what suits you, rather than
what someone else thinks would suit them best.

Just for a perspective of what I have 'liked' (driven) over the years:
A 60 something MG Midget
A 68 or so Datsun 2000 (some of these years are guesses from old memory)
A 70 Datsun 240Z
A ?? Datsun 280Z
A 79 RX-7
The previously mentioned DelSol S model
My current 95 DelSol VTEC model.

Surprise! A lot of strong opinions!

I'm not the world's experrt on either. I've driven Miatas
recently. Test drove a del Sol VTEC many years back.

First, if I'd get a dS, I'd look VTEC model, but they are rare.
160 hp, firmer suspension, ABS. The Si might do (125 hp, got the
firmer suspension in '96, no ABS) . Don't let someone tell you
the Si is the "VTEC" model though it has VTEC on the intake. It
is not the same. I would not get the base 102hp model. Simply
not sporting enough. But for your price range, I think the VTEC
is probably out of reach?

And so is the more recent "NB" miata, so you'll have to "make do"
with (and many prefer) the original, retractable headlight "NA".
It went from a 1.6 to 1.8L in '94. All Miatas are fun cars
regardless of engine size and year.

The dS has a bad rep amongst Honda fans. I think somewhat
undeserved. Part is that it replaced the beloved CRX. Count me as
a fan of that one. Part that the base model was underpowered and
apparently soft. But the VTEC is very fun and fast. And the
sound of the engine at 8k is intoxicating.

Miatas are much more raw, nevermind the girl-car image. Unless my
impressions and recollections are being filtered by the
intervening years.

Drive both, you might find one works for you and the other
doesn't. Me? I'm looking for a new/newer Miata. Part since I
want to get my first RWD. Part since it provides more feedback.

I am a little surprised you like the DelSol over the Miata. The old Z and
RX7 were on my short list with Miata when I was looking for a small RWD
sportscar. It was a chance test-sitting in a Boxster at the Porsche/Mazda
dealership that sold me on the merits of a convertible. It was then I knew a
roofed car just wouldn't do.

since Del Sols are rare, i think you're better off getting a Miata.
it's easier to find one, lots of aftermarket go-fast parts available,
fun to drive. if you really want the Del Sol, you should seek the Si
trim. it has a peppier engine VTEC engine.

Comes off is not quite the same as goes all the way down. It's a faux
roadster but that is how it is intended. "A vehicle where you can
drive at 70mph and not even get your hair out of place!" is how it was
advertised. So much for the wind through the hair fun of the
roadster... <g>

>Four years, and only one blown engine...

Hmm. Over 10 years, 1,800+ miles at Sebring Raceway, hardly ever have
the tach below 4,500rpm even in daily driving, over 350 miles worth of
autocrosses where it virtually lives on the limiter and currently with
105,000 miles on it. So far one timing belt change, oil changes and a
clutch change (recent). I'll stick with mine thank you. <g>

Could be related to the fact that I'm a bit older (I imagine) than most
if not all of you here. It had a few nice touches that I liked... a
practical trunk space that's handy for my work where I have to keep
overnight stuff in there in case of a snow storm or such in the winter,
and a full convertible wasn't high on my 'want' list because of
experiences with previous full ragtops (one got completely stolen (the
MG)) and the plastic rear windows, wind noise, leaks after time passes
etc. I know that many of the rear windows are glass now though (in the
Miata, right?) but I was looking at used (older) ones with plastic
rears.

Possibly if I could have afforded a brand new Miata, maybe... but a used
one that could have had the crap beat out of it (engine/drivetrain)
previously didn't appeal to me either.

I'd vote for the actual VTEC model, rather than the Si. The Si is only
half VTEC. I drove one on a test drive, and while it was certainly
quicker than the S model that I drove for a time, it just didn't compare
to the full VTEC model, even though the latter is a little bit heavier.
