Same on my '99- the original handle seemed to be press-fit and secured
with a tiny bit of glue; once "broken" loose it came off with great
patience and much twisting. The stalk of the lever is just a perfectly
round steel tube. The wood handle (I think from Moss) slid on very
nicely, and has remained motionless and snug for 3 years.

I believe there are instructions on miata.net. In addition, get
a steering wheel puller (I got mine at Autozone). I used brute
force once and destroyed my $$$ clock-spring. (Wire got caught.)
