Need some technical help, please. I just bought a used 1991 miata. It
has the "famous" radio problem which I understand is a short caused by
dust and moisture. I printed out a fix from information on miata.net.
Found a friend at work who will make the repair, if I get the radio
out. I'm not all that mechanically gifted, so I would appreciate some
instructions as to how to remove the radio. By the way, I have the
AM/FM Cassette + CD player. It is original and made by Panasonic. I
believe I have the security code from the previous owner. Can anyone
provide some instructions as to how to properly remove the radio? Would
appreciate any help I can get. Love the car. Am going through my
second childhood at 55 and this was just the thing for me. I think I
was born to have the car. Thanks in advance for the help.

Unscrew shift knob (just screws out).
Remove 5 screws from mid console (2 in side, 1 below ashtray,
2 in storage area) and lift it out.
Remove eyeball vents from center console (see miata.net, or get
a rope through the holes and pull hard)
and take out the screws below it using a magnetic screw driver.
Also take out the bottom screw and lift out the center console
after detaching the wire plug near the top.
Now you should be able to screw out the radio.
Standard joke is to forget the wire plug during reinstallation.
In that case your lights won't go down.

You might be happier to pay the $40-50 + shipping costs and have the
radio repaired and upgraded by Jeff Anderson, who does the famous
headrest speaker mode along with the on/off mod, and who helps
sort out your crosse up headrest speaker wiring as well. His
contact info is on miata.net, I think in the Garage section. I
just got my modified radio back and it is a big improvement (which
I'm actually thinking of selling and upgrading to an aftermarket
MD player now....)
