greetings all, i am in need of some wisdom.
whenever it rains hard, i get about a litre of water in the driver's side
rocker panel. It's happened twice now, and I've drained it easily by
removing the drain plug screw under the rocker panels at the bottom of the
fender.
What is causing this? is the drain tube for the top plugged or come off?
or is it something else?

much appreciated,
charles.

Yep. I found it when I was under the car and probed with a piece
of wire. Guess how much gunk came down on my face. There is a
tray on top where the rain rail drains, and flows into the drain
tube. The water in the rocker panels comes when the tray
overflows.

it seems to me, that the drain on the bottom of the top is getting plugged .
that cause's the water to run in some passage to drain to the bottom rail. i
had the problem at one time & unplugged the tubing from under the rear
quarter , then i ran the hose to clean it out .( theres two holes one on
each side) i hope it clears up some question that baffled me for some time.
their good cars but any car if wet for a long will rot from the inside...

So where does one find the manual that tells you the location of all these
drain holes????

I don't think it is in the owner's manual. It is clear in the
Miata Enthusiast's manual (a user-friendly workshop manual).

It is covered in the miata.net FAQ at

http://www.miata.net/faq/faq3.html#X

which points to TSB that shows you where they are

http://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/s034_94.html

and what you might do if the problem persists.

While there, I noticed that their section on roof leaks

http://www.miata.net/faq/faq3.html#S

(same 'page', earlier internal anchor point) mentions all of the
things we have talked about here, rather succinctly.

Okay, I might be drunkhere , but the miata.net site tells you to enlarge the
drain holes?
I have OEM-like screws in all 4 holes?
What's going on here?
I thought the screws fastened the fender bottoms?
Are they supposed to be open?

pls enlighten me....

The drain holes are not where there are screws.

If you look at the bottom of the car you can see a flange sticking down. This
flange is where the body panels are welded to the floor board of the car. The
bottom edge of the body panels and the loard door flame has tabs set in
slightly so that there is a small gap between the flange on the fender and the
flange on the floor board. These are the drain holes.

What I did, just a month ago when I notices water sloshing around, was to get
under the car and look. If you follow the seam where the body panels weld
onto the floor board you can see the places where there are small gaps. I got
a piece of music wire and poked in the gap and it felt solid so I checked on
the other side of the car and the music wire went up in the gap easy. So I
went back to work on the plugged side. I managed to clean out the drain hole
that is under the passenger side behind the door and out drained maybe 1/2
gallon of water.

As the other poster said, the drain holes are in the part of the
unibody construction where the side panels match the bottom. The
diagram above shows that they are where the detents are that identify
the jacking points. What probably puzzles you is that they look
more like slits than holes.

The narrowness of the slit is why it can clog easily, which is
why the TSB shows to open it up into more of an oval if it is
really a problem. Cleaning with a thin wire is good enough.
