2 High School Students Killed in Collision With School Bus

WILSON, N.C. (AP) -- Two teen-agers were killed today when their sports
car veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a school bus,
official said. Six students on the bus and the bus driver suffered minor
injuries. One of the victims turned 17 today, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 7:40 a.m. on a curve on N.C. 42 west of here,
and about a mile from Hunt High School, where both the victims were
juniors, officials said.
The victims were Dennis Williams, whose birthday was today, and the
driver, Blake Taylor, 17, said Steve Ellis, assistant principal at Hunt
High. The bus was carrying sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, ages 11
to 14, from Springfield Middle School.

James Chestnut of Sims, who witnessed the accident, said the boys' car
pulled onto the highway and sped off in the westbound lane. He said it
got into the wrong lane and struck the bus in front of Wildwood Free
Will Baptist Church. Mike Kimbrell, who was behind the bus in the
eastbound lane, said the bus ``rose up in the air'' when the car struck
it and came down in a cloud of smoke and dust.

He ran to the wreckage, and a nurse who happened to be on the scene
instructed him to hold the teen-age driver's head in his hands to help
him breathe. The boy was pinned in the wreckage, Kimbrell said. ``I held
his head to try to allow him some breath, and he died,'' said Kimbrell.
The other boy, he said, tried to say something and also died.

Robert Carver of the N.C. Division of Public Safety said the bus driver,
Joyce Brown, evacuated the children through the bus emergency door
despite suffering a possible broken wrist., School officials said in the
school cafeteria. Carver said she has ``a quality driving record.'' Some
Springfield parents went to the accident scene to pick up their
children. The other uninjured students were taken to Springfield on
another bus.

A school crisis team of counselors and psychologists was sent to
Springfield Middle and Hunt High schools to help students cope with the
situation, said Larry Price, superintendent of Wilson County Schools.

See, there we go, we all need to make fun of ourselves once in a while.

Ha okay here is what I feel. I f you don't care stop reading about right
now.

Yes I think Jason is a bit forward on his views on the tragedy but to ask
him to leave the Ng because of that?.

I say as long as you own a Miata Mr. Gyda please stay and continue to post
albeit if you wish to be a little bit more sympathetic in your posts.

Witnesses said the Miata was going 70-80 mph on the wrong side of the
road when it hit the bus. The driver and 9 children on the bus were
slightly injured, but not seriously (the driver had a broken wrist).

Considering a ~2400lb car hit a 26,000lb bus, I was surprised at the
amount of damage done to the bus. Apparently the birthday boy and his
friend were going to skip school, since they were leaving the school.

The link below has a picture of the miata remains and the bus. A very
sobering example of how important it is to drive responsibly.

Chill people! Are we humans or what? Two young people died today in a
vehicle that we all enjoy. Yet, it's "are there parts", "Miata for sale",
etc. Get real! Don't tell me you've never passed someone on a two lane
highway before. Unfortunately this young man didn't have the experience that
some have or *think* they have. And I take it nobody on this NG ever skipped
school or went for a joy ride when a teenager. We are all at one time or
another in too much of a hurry and don't make all the right choices. I feel,
yes, feel for the families and friends of these two teenagers. Have some
respect for humanity or just stay out of it.

I truly have a hard time working up sympathy towards two people who directly
caused their own deaths, while causing injury toward others, yet I find the
fact that some people can be so heartless and cruel about another person
chilling.

Maybe it's just me. I've been to enough accidents, washed off enough
blood, worked a claims department at an insurance company, and seen
enough of my friends die that quite frankly another couple of bodies
doesnt' phase me in the least. People die and it's not always pretty.
Have you ever seen, first hand, what an accident can do to someone?
Did you realize that the people who were killed in this instance were
at fault and it was one of the RARE times that the people at fault
were the ones that died and not the 'innocents'? If I feel for either
of them, I feel for the passenger. I'm going to go out on a limb and
guess that two 17 year olds (one just that day) were going to skip
school. They decided to do this at the last moment and the adrenaline
started flowing. They decided to get out the hell out of there before
anyone saw them around and got them in trouble. Nevermind that they
might do some damage the adrenaline is pumping hard and they are int
hat 'go for it man!' zone. I'm imagining their expressions as they
have this big "shit-eating" grin on their faces as they come flying
past a few cars, maybe hitting their horns in glee.. and then comes
that bus.. First there is the "We can make it!" this is where the
pedal is on the floor, the engine turning for all it's worth.. then
comes the "uh oh.." phase where everything in their body goes cold..
the sudden realization that they aren't going to make it.. and that
there is no where to turn and no free spaces to dive.. if they even
have enough experiance to look. Next is the "We're not going to make
it!" phase.. this is generally felt with the wonderful numbness.. the
feeling that you see what is happening and you are absolutely
powerless to do a damned thing about it. At this point you, and in
this case, the passenger, are just along for the ride. Next?
Nothing.. absolute stillness.. You know something happened.. you know
you are in trouble.. you can't feel much of anything.. the blood is
singing in your ears.. your heart is pounding.. you can't feel
yourself breathing.. you see faces.. you hear screams.. you smell
everything from burning oil to gas.. always the gas! The biggest fear
you will ever have in a car accident is fire.. after all, if you live
through the collission it's the last thing you ever want to deal
with.. you smell that gas.. and it seems like everything around you is
ticking with hot metal, maybe even sparks. They might not be there but
you damned sure imagine them. Yet you can't do anything about it. you
are sitting there, maybe still in the seat, maybe there isn't a seat.
You don't know what of your body is left.. or if you are okay.. every
thought about being invincible went out the window in that last 50th
of a second before the impact. You just want to know why it's so hard
to breath.. why you are still so cold.. why everything is slowly
fading out.. why is it so hard to concentrate? You want to scream so
loudly to everyone to stop hovering over you and to let you up.. yet
they aren't even touching you.. why aren't they touching you? Why
can't you see them clearly? Why is everything growing so warm now?
Will they please let you breathe?? .. then perhaps nothing...

I've been the passenger in a car that went out of control. Big time.
In this case it wasn't the drivers fault, my fault, or anyone else's
(directly). The car had complete electrical failure and took out the
power brakes/steering/etc. By the time he figured out what happened it
was too late. I was lucky. He wasn't.

How can I be so harsh about a couple of kids who ran their car under a
bus? Because, Shep, kids do stupid things like that every single day.
Is it a tragedy? Perhaps.. For all we know these are the two top
hoodlems in the county.. or they could be straight A students who
never bugged anyone a day in their life. Should I be sorrowful? Why?
Kids kill themselves off every day by drugs, gangs, suicide, auto
accidents (at fault and otherwise). Some just do stupid things. Some
don't. Does age really make that much of a difference? Why is it when
there is an accident and 40 people die, the only one that gets media
attention is the stupid kid? They are all people aren't they? Would
you have reacted the same way if it was a 35 year old businessmen with
a colleage in the car? Does it matter that it's a Miata?

Call me what you will, perhaps cold-hearted is the right word for it,
but people die every day and I will to. Why should this pair be any
more or less important than anyone else?

Oh.. I also have no reason to follow the 'they should shelter those
Jr. high students away so that they don't see the dead teens" bit. At
that age they really OUGHT to know what death is, and that it CAN
happen to them. Maybe then they'll be a little less likely to do
something that stupid in the future. Maybe they'll even think about
it for just a brief moment before picking up a beer can at a party in
a few years.. Seeing that accident might just well have more potential
for good in the long run even if it did cost two teens their lives.

You know Rexven in Nigeria, the carcass of that car will be left by the
roadside for weeks to remind others of what can happen. I bet you if you
drive by there today there won't be any trace of the tragedy that happened.

Too much disinfectant around.

I have couple of kids and the last thing I want to be worried about is if
they made it to school because of two numbnuts flying around a curve.

BTW, this is the second time I will ask you about writing a book. You wrote

I am with Emmanuel on this one. If you read a Miata newsgroup, you
can expect to find people with an interest in Miatas, but you cannot
expect that you will like all of them on a personal level.

Of course, kill files can make things quite a bit more palatable. :)

That was really my angle - the passenger determined his fate by choosing to
skip class, and by not telling the driver to back down (although he may have
told the driver to slow, but was ignored).

In Nigeria, the carcass of the car, and probably it's occupants, too, would be
there for days, primarily because the government there is run by some truly
unscrupulous, uncivilized, corrupt, and irresponsible people.

I used to work for Harris Corporation's Satellite Communications Division, and
the folks there would tell us of just such horrors that they would see when
they went to Nigeria on assignment. One coworker described the place as the
"asshole of the universe."
