Hello mates,

I am planning to buy a multi-purpose vehicle very soon, however, it is hard
for me to choose between the Mazda MPV and the Honda Odyssey given the very
similar
equipement level, on-road performance and level of comfort they offer.
Besides, they cost much the same.

Can you guys (girls) give me some advice, please ???????????

Definetly the MPV.....just look at the recent crash test they did at 40
MPH besides the Honda is ugly compared to the 1997 Mazda 4x4 All Sport!

The Honda Odyssey was only rated as "marginal" in the crash tests. The
only "safe" MPV tested was the Ford Windstar which got a "good" score.
The Honda results surprised me considering how new a design it is and
all the built in safety features.

I have been a very happy MPV owner since '92. The van has given me
absolutely no trouble whatsoever and even though it's approaching 60K
miles it still looks and handles like new. I wish the seating were a
bit more flexible (see the Nissan Sienna) but that's my only complaint.
My next mpv/van will probably be a Mazda as well.

I wish you luck in your quest. You may also wish to visit
http://www.edmunds.com and take a look at what they say about each
vehicle including pricing etc.

40mph? Did they detail how the Mazda's occupants would have fared?

I have a 90 MPV - 90,000 mi
V6- 2 w.d
It's always been terrible in the snow - even with 4 snow tires- but then
its rear wheel drive. It's on its 3rd set of front brake rotors-they warp
severely avout every 30,000 mi - the dealer admits they are undersize for
the vehicle yet still charges $300 each time, There's an oil leak- 1 quart
between changes - at a core plug on the back side of the engine-
developed at 50,000 mi. have to pull the engine to repair - $1200 ( which
will but a lot of oil and driveway cleaner). The engine sounds like a
diesel when cold due to the clogged lifter problem with this engine. 5W-30
helps some - but its still very noisy when cold. The paint (silver) is
falling off the front of the hood. The 80,000 mile check engine light is
still on as it runs fine and I'm not inclined to pay $257 to have it
turned off (it's programmed to come on every 80,000 mi and the intstrument
cluster has to be pulled to reset it).The front end of the engine chirps
like a flock of birds because the bearings in the alternator and two idler
pulleys are dying - will have to be replaced soon. Other than that it's
been a relaible vehicle,

My 89 Accord LXI - 97,000 mi - runs fine and had required an average of
$234 dealer maintenance the last three years- including oil changes.

I know which dealership I'd head toward!
