Hi there..just got a Rancho 2.5" lift w/Softride springs installed 2
days ago, and now I hear an awful clunking sound around what seems to
be the tranny or transfer case. It sounds like metal hitting metal and
I can sometimes feel it in my feet as though it was hitting the the
floor. It just started happening intermittently and seems to worsen
when I go over bumps in the road. I'm at a loss and unfortunately have
left myself short with the lift kit purchase/install. I'm hoping it is
something simple, but I have that damn sinking feeling. If anyone has
experienced this same sort of problem and/or knows what it might be I
would appreciate the help. It's a 94 Yj 4.0 L stock tires/rims, and
now the lift as well. If more info is needed please ask and I will do
my best to post more.
Thanx in advance
Markus

Markus,
The first thing I would recommend is getting under your vehicle and spending
some quality time looking at potential contact areas. If you are getting a
metal clunking sound, chances are good that you will be able to spot the
area that is actually hitting. Look for shiny spots, dents, scrapes, or
anything that does not match the surrounding area....ie., missing rust, mud,
dirt, etc.

I had a problem on mine that was a skid plate coming in contact with another
component. It showed up as a bright shiny area and was easy to spot once I
was on my back and under the vehicle.

Also check to make sure everything is nice and tight, such as the shock
mounts. A loose mount will certainly bang and clunk when going over a bump.

Another option may be to carefully raise the vehicle (jack and jack stands
under the frame) and then see if you can get any noise from it by moving the
axles, etc. Be very careful that you do not end up wearing the vehicle on
your chest!!!

Good luck on getting to the source of your problem.

Check to see if your exhaust system is cuddling too close to the driveline.
My 95 YJ had the same issue with a 2.5" lift.

I had some noises coming from under mine and it was the u-bolts for the
springs had come loose a little. the shim was sliding. also look for where
the trac bar attaches to the axle mine was hitting the shock when i hit the
gas hard. When you install a lift you need to check all the bolts and
anything else you touched after 100 miles or so then wait awhile longer and
do it again. make sure all the bolts are properly torqued and everything is
tight. like the other guy said, look for shiny spots, they will indicate
movement. my 89 YJ has a mystery thunk that only operates when its wet!!
welcome to jeephood!! congrats

Look at driveshaft angles. I did a 4" SkyJacker Lift w/SOA conversion, and
I had to notch my xfer case skid plate, to stop the shaft from smacking it
under any sort of flex, or articulation. Could also be the U-Bolts,
allowing one of the sides on the rear axle to "walk" under acceleration.
