Anyone have good luck with any particular compass in their
Jeep? Was looking at a good marine style compass due to
their ability to take a beating but doubt they would
properly compensate for all of the steel of my jeep. Also,
analog preferred vs digital.

Thanks,
Andy

A very good marine compass may have adjustments so you can compensate
for your Jeep's steel. Your Jeep's steel body produces what's known as
a "deviation" error in the compass. Or if the compass in your price
range doesn't have that adjustment ability, you can do what's called
"boxing the compass" which means you turn your Jeep four (or eight)
times, 90 (or 45) degrees each time. At each rotation, you note what
the Jeep mounted compass reads vs. what an accurate hand-held compass
held outside the Jeep says. Write down the differences and you'll have
what's known as a "deviation" chart. The deviation chart indicates what
the true headings are vs. what the compass is indicating. Boats and
aircraft generally always have a deviation chart so you can steer the
correct course vs. what the compass indicates.

Have you thunk of a GPS? It will provide heading information, plus it gives the bonus of distance to
target, how to get back to where you came from, nearest landmark (road, river, train track, etc.)
data, and it will also give you altitude data and tell you what time it is.

One thing about a GPS... if it's not moving, it has no idea which way
it's pointing.

That's true, but it knows which way it was going before you stopped, and that ususally works pretty
good. And, you only have to walk about 20 feet to get a new bearing. And, you can carry a ElCheapo
compass for when you are away from the vehicle.

I don't know about other manufacturers but with the Magellan 315, 320 and
330 you can determine compass directions without moving.

Hi Jerry,
Get the one that comes with many of the high end new cars, and Hurst rent-a-car, you know the one
that has a little road map on the screen and a voice telling you which way to turn on the trail ahead. ;-)

They must have a little electronic flux-gate compass inside because GPS,
by itself, doesn't know which way the actual unit itself is pointing.

...and the little voice that says, "Turn right at the next tree. No you dumb ass, not that tree, the
next one."

That's why I wheel with my ten year old son. He still assumes his dad
can do no wrong <g>! Now my wife is a different story LOL!

My 10-year-old kid just shakes her head and mumbles something that sounds like, "Shit Dad, we're
lost again. How come you never turn the GPS on?" <g>

Hi Andrew,
Family forum may a little off topic in this tread, but, the family is
exactly what sold us on Jeeps, it's a family thing, rather just riding out dirt
bikes or whatever away from each other, as before.

Bill, I think Andrew was referring to the sh** word used previously in
this 'family forum' <g>.

I have thought about it but wish to stay with a manual
compass to eliminate being at the mercy of power.

Thanks
