Now that I've ponyed up for an `06 Patriot cage for the street, what are
the common failure modes for that product? I've already gotten bitten by
rear suspension parts, and I suspect that the foot air doors for the
heater don't actually work.

Hi, I also own a 2006 Patriot and I have experienced some of the
issues you mentioned. The rear suspension parts are known to wear out
quickly and cause noise and handling problems. I had to replace the
lower control arms and the sway bar links on mine. The foot air doors
for the heater are also prone to malfunction, especially if the blend
door actuator fails. I had to replace that part as well.

Some other common failures that you should be aware of are:

CVT transmission failure: This can cause whining noises, overheat
warnings, and acceleration problems. It is more common in earlier
models like ours. You may need to replace the transmission fluid or
the entire transmission if it fails.
Water leaks into the cabin: This can happen due to faulty seals around
the windows, roof, sunroof, and other openings. It can cause damage to
the interior and the electrical system. You may need to reseal the
affected areas or replace the damaged components.

Difficulty shifting manual transmission: This can happen due to a
faulty clutch, shift cable, or synchronizer. It can make it hard to
change gears or get stuck in a specific gear. You may need to adjust
or replace the faulty parts.
