all,
installing new sound system in jeep.

i need to replace the front speakers in my 91 wrangler.
managed to get out the old ones without losing to much blood... they look
like 4x6 speakers.
but i have bought a couple 4x6 speakers (infinity and blaupunkt) that
wouldn't fit the 4 studs in the jeep that the speaker mounts to.

anyone have a wrangler and replaced the front speakers? what speakers did
you get to fit?

thanks,
wrangler....

Could you tell me about getting the old ones out? Did you have to remove the
dash?

nope, didn't remove the dash... tried to remove the glove box, but it seems
to have 2 screws holding it from the back (!!) that i couldn't get a screw
driver on.

this is on a 91 wrangler... the newer ones might be different..

to get the passenger side one out... i removed the little door light and got
it out of the way... removed the speaker wires by pressing a little tab on
the connector and pulling them off. then removed the bottom 2 nuts and the
top inside nut.. they were lose enough i could just use my fingers... the
top outside nut was to tight for my fingers and couldn't get a wrench or
anything on it. so got my daughter to stick her hand up there holding a
small socket (11/32inch fit). with the socket in her fingers she could turn
it enough to get the nut off. to get the speaker out, since there is a metal
bracket right behind the magnet.. i had to bend the speaker frame a little.
if i didn't have a daughter with little hands, i think the speaker would
have stayed!!

the drivers side is a bigger pain! had to go under the hood, remove the
nuts from the studs holding the parking brake. then under the drivers side
dash removed the bolt holding the parking brake assembly tot he dash. moved
the parking brake assembly out of the way. also removed the little door
light. again.. had to pop off the wire connector, and fish my hand up to
remove the nuts and mangled the speaker frame getting it out.

hope putting the new speakers in (if i find any that fit the studs) will be
easier!!

in case your are wondering.. the studs were 3.625 inches apart
horizontally and 4.625 inches apart vertically. and the removed speakers
were 1.625 inches high with about zero clearance to the metal bracket. All
of the 4x6 speakers i have tried or measured so far have holes that are no
more than 3.4 inches horizontally, so they won't fit unless i make new
holes. also they sometimes have a tweeter that protudes a little forward of
the speaker frame, which won't work since the wrangler has a flat metal
grille.

Steve,

I haven't changed the speakers in my YJ yet, but here's a copy of a post
I saved some time ago to use when I finally get around to it.

Dave

I just installed new 4x6 coaxial speakers in the dash of my 92 YJ this
weekend. I can tell you from experience REMOVE THE ENTIRE DASH. It's
faster.
It's easier. It's LESS LIKELY TO DAMAGE THE SPEAKER CONES. It's easier
than
removing the seats and squirming around on your back for hours on end.

You'll need:
2 4x6 speakers*
8 #8 flat washers
8 #8-32 wing nuts (You'll need these because the dash won't pull out
very
far)
...and some Loctite.

*Be careful here: There are two mounting hole patterns available. My
JBL's
have 5 patterns and I think that I used the 117.5x92mm.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Make sure that your new speakers mount flush to the
face
of the speaker basket. (Lay the speaker face-down: If the tweeter
holds the
speaker off the surface, you'll need to fabricate some gaskets using
upholstery foam.)

1. Remove the Torx fasteners from each side of your dash panel (6 T40
and 2
T45 bolts).
2. Remove the lateral braces from the roll cage (2 T50 and 4 T40
bolts).
3. Lower the windshield.
4. Remove the 5 bolts holding the dash panel to the car.
5. Viola!

Let me know how it goes (or if you need help).

I put pioneer coax 4x6's in the dash of my 87. I didnt; drop the dash
or even loosen it, on the drivers side i remved the e-brake handle to
give me a bit more room to maneuver, on the passenger side i just
snaked my hand up in and snugged it down.

Doesn't Crutchfield make an adapter? I know they make one for the TJ front
speakers I have 2 now.

not much into the loud radio thing, grew out of it 10 years ago, but did
have to replace a faulty speaker in my '90 wrangler. I looked all over
for a replacement and then stumbled on one at auto zone for $10. i was
shopping for an air filter and there it was just hanging on the wall
display with other odds and ends. now i know it wont be as good as an
infinity it does just fine for me tuning into the ball game.

Do you just pull the dash out, speedo, instruments, and all.

I went with Alpine plates, 4"x6" I believe...
They fit in at a slight angle and are a PITA to install but worth the loss
of blood, IMHO...

Just go to Best Buy etc. and pay the $20 and have them install them. I got a
great set of 4x6 Cerwin Vega's, and it took the guy 10 minutes to put them in,
easy as that and they sound awesome. I know all u guys are DIY'ers but
hey...there aint no shame in it!

just a little warning.....
i also bought the Sound Wedge boxes from Quadratec made by Thor that hold
6x9 speakers and fit into the space between the roll bar and the wheel well
on either side of the back seat....

they were good quality, fit perfectly into the space between the rollbar and
wheel well...

HOWEVER... that little space was there to let the front seats recline...
now i can only recline the front seats a little past vertical before they
hit the speakers!!

bummer big time...

Last week I installed some 4"x6" Infinity (model # 4622 cpf) plate speakers
in my '90 Wrangler Sahara. These speakers are expensive due to the plate
design and overall high quality, but I think worth a few bucks more since
they sound so much better and are the primary speakers heard in the Jeep. I
didn't have the proper holes predrilled either, but that was quickly
remedied by using the factory speakers as a template and drilling with an
appropriately sized drill bit; be sure to add some washers on the backside
when done though.

Also installed the Thor boxes with Kenwood 6"x9" speaker the same day.
Excellent sound quality overall. This upgrade was long overdue!

BTW, for installation I did remove the dash and drop the window for full
access to properly install. A quality install will have soldered
connections, wire loom, proper routing of wires. Besides, I had some other
upgrades to do in the dash area at the same time.

Good Luck!

i found that it was easier to just undo the side bolts and wedge some crap
between the dash and the body, this gave me enough space to get the old
speakers out and the new ones in.... the drivers side is hella difficult none
the less....

When i installed my 4x6 speakers in my '95 YJ dash, I used two
diagonal holes and cut off the remaining two "ears" on the speaker
mounting plate. They have worked fine for almost 6 years now.
