How optimistic can one be with the 95 Civic Dx timing belt. I have 85K miles
on my car, still 5K miles before the recommended 90K miles limit. And how
much should it cost. Also is it necessary to replace the water pump with the
timing belt.

Car is overdue for the timing belt by over a year. Do the timing belt, water
pump, and ALL acessory belts. Parts alone will cost $140-160 from dealer.
Our local dealer has a special, $299 or $349 installed with oil change.

That's a hell of a deal. I gave a relative of mine who is financially
strapped a '92 Civic with about 94k miles on it under the strict guidance
that they need to spend the money to get the timing belt and water pump
replaced (this relative has driven fords and dodge's all her life, and they
constantly broke down on her, so believe me, the gift of a '92 Civic has
been a dream come true for her in terms of confidence on the road and
financially). Anyways, it cost her $500 at the dealer. That said, she (and
I) have the confidence knowing that she had a vehicle that will last her
many more miles without major repair.

I have a 94 Civic Ex with 160,000 miles.
Never had the timing belt changed. Lucky, I guess. After reading these
postings for the past two months, guilt consumed me, and I had the belt,
pump, etc. serviced two weeks ago.
I do feel better. Money well spent.

What did it cost you?

Did you go private or have a dealer do it?

My favorite local shop charges 3 hours for the belt, half an hour for the
water pump, and half an hour each for the cam or crank seal if needed.

$165 labor for belt
$ 40 timing belt
$ 60 t-belt tensioner roller
$ 28 drive belts
$ 28 water pump labor
$ 63 water pump
$ 12 coolant/waste

$396 total. (plus tax, and I rounded up most prices to a whole dollar)

Not bad, 3.5 hours labor for a hour job. Wish I could make $165 + $28 for 1
hour of work.

au contraire. if the water pump starts to bind, itll take that new belt n
rip it to shreds.

Had a water pump lock up completely all of a sudden once. I imagine a
vane broke or something. Snapped every belt instantly.
