My friend has a 92 Acura Vigor. The ABS light has just come on and stays on.
We 'tested' the ABS by hammering the brakes -- the tires locked up with no
pulsing, so the ABS really is off.
I had the following questions:
1) Is there a diagnostic we can do for the ABS w/o a computer?
2) I have a 90 CRX, and the ECU can flash codes -- does the Vigor have this
capability and is the ECU aware of the ABS? Is the ECU under the passenger
floorboard?
Thanks in advance
John

Before you panic, first check your brake fluid levels, if it goes below
the minimum, ABS light may go on and stay on, or it may be a blown fuse.
If it is not obvious, make sure have a machanic check and service it.
In case you just want more information read on...
According to my 1993 (applies to my '94 too) Vigor Factory Service Manual,
you can look for the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)
using a multi-meter, and a jumper wire.
According to the manual, it says:
1. Disconnect the service check connector (2 PIN) from the connector
cover located under the glove box (picture near right foot footwell
of the front passenger seat). Connect the two terminals of the service
check connectors with a jumper wire.
2. Turn the ignition switch ON, but DO NOT start the engine.
3. Record the blinking frequency of the ABS indicator light.
The blinking frequency indicates the DTC.
The blinking code will be something like this:
turn ignition switch on (DON'T Start Engine) -> 1 sec delay ->
2 second pause -> Major code # blinks -> 1 second pause ->
Sub-Code blinks -> 5 seconds delay
if there is a second or third fault, there will be another 5 second
pause, then the major code / sub-code blink will flash.
Here are the Codes (Major-Sub code) and problem areas listed:
1-0 ABS Pump Motor over-run -- check solenoid, ABS Pump motor, pressure
switch
1-2 ABS pump motor circuit problem - abs motor relay, ABS unit fuse, ABS
motor fuse
1-3 High Pressure leakage - Solenoids
1-4 Pressure Switch
1-8 Accumulator gas leakage
2-1 Parking brake switch related problems -- check brake fluids level
3-1 ABS brake Pulser (front right) -- Check wheel sensor
3-2 ABS brake Pulser (front left) -- Check wheel sensor
3-4 ABS brake (either rear left or rear right) -- Check wheel sensor
4-1 Wheel Sensor (front right)
4-2 Wheel Sensor (front left) -- Check wheel sensor
4-4 Wheel Sensor Rear Right
4-8 Wheel Sensor Rear left
5-0 Wheel Sensor(s) Rear right & Right Left
5-4 Wheel Sensor(s) Rear Right
5-8 Wheel Sensor(s) Rear Left
6-0 Fail Safe relay (Front & Rear)
6-1 Fail Safe Relay (front)
6-4 Fail Safe relay (Rear)
7-1 Solenoid related problems (front right)
7-2 Solenoid related problems (front left)
7-4 Solenoid related problems (Rear right & left)
Some helpful notes:
* The ABS control unit can indcate up to three troubles.
* If you miscount the blinking frequency, turn the ignition switch off
then on to cycle the ABS indicator light again.
Caution: before starting the engine, disconnect the jumper wire from the
service check connector, or else, the Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
will stay on with the engine running.
If ABS indicator remains on after engine is started, but does not blink
any DTC, then there are other items that can be checked.
I have had very good luck with my '94 Vigor GS 5-speed with absolutely
no problems, now with 101K Miles and going strong. Good luck.
Scott.
PS. By the way, there is a connector for "ABS Inspection connector" (6pin)
under the passenger front seat, but you need to hook it up to a dedicated
ABS checker device.
