My '92 Accord with 80K miles died at the end of a 400 mile trip.
After replacing the fuel filter which is what the symptom appeared to
be, I removed the distributor cap and found the rotor spinning freely
and had partially melted. After replacing the rotor and cap, the car
started again, but I heard the loud screeching noise (as described in
other postings here). I had the car towed 100 miles to the nearest
Honda dealer. Yep, the bearings were bad in the distributor.

When I got home I read conflicting postings here about recalls for the
90-93 distributors and some getting distributors replaced at no cost.
Was there a recall or not? Just wondering.

Thanks,
JS

There was a 'product update'. Honda replaced my distributor for free
on my 92 Accord (though it was not broken).

Contact American Honda corp to see if you can get them to pay for the
repair. I've got the original notice that Honda mailed to me if you
want me to fax you a copy......

from alldata.com, comes the following for the 92 Accord:

Emissions Recalls

TSB Number Issue Date TSB Title
95049 DEC 95 Distributor - Updated Unit

The distributor in my 1991 Accord Wagon started squealing loudly a few
years ago. Since it was W-A-Y out of warranty, I visited my local Honda
dealership to find out how much a new one would cost me. I was told that
it was covered under a TSB and would be replaced free of charge!

Can't beat that!

I too had a loud screeching noise a couple of weeks ago, I've got 93k on an
Accord EX. I drove it to the dealer here and the master mechanic knew right
away it was the distributor. 450DM later, I got a new one. I would like
for Honda to pay for it if it was a defect and a recall. I'm new to this
group and am learning a boat load every day. If anyone knows addresses or
telephone numbers I can write or call I would appreciate it. Thanks....b1

JS,
There is a recall on the 92-93 Honda Accord distributors. All of the
'92 Accords were included in the recall, but only certain VIN numbers from
the '93 were recalled. I have a copy of the TSB. If anyone needs a copy,
please email me directly and I can fax that to you. (In the US only).

My '92 Accord had the same symptoms y'all mentioned and the dealer
informed me about the TSB and replaced the entire distributor for free and
even paid for the towing.

Abey.

JS here again. I stopped by my local Honda dealer, explained situation
about my 400 mile trip, showed him the TSB for the '92 Accord.

He looked it up and said, NO, the TSB does not mean Recall and it would
not be installed for free or reimburse me for the work I had done outta
state. No mention about VINs. He did say there was a recall for bad
bearings in the '90 Accord distributor (which my son has), but it was
good for only 6 years or 100,000 miles. He said I could contact American
Honda Corp if I wanted...

Any suggestions? NastyGram to American Honda?

Thanks,
JS

phone call to American Honda....

My local dealer gave me a whole distributor free....it was a 'product
update' which means voluntary recall. The time/mileage may have
expired for their offer...mine was replaced a couple years ago at
under 100K miles.

Which one is harder:
1. Replace/update the distibutor bearing with a seal retainer or
2. Roll back the mileage?

When I went to an independent repair shop for a smog check on my 92 Accord
EX, his computer picked up a possible recall for the distributer, bulletin
#95049 dated 12/11/95. I haven't gone to a dealer to followup yet.
