I'm getting conflicting stories from dealers around here, so I'm wondering if someone here can help
me.

Does the 2002 Odyssey come with "break-in" oil that is not supposed to be changed for a specific
length of time (or mileage) or does it come with regular "off-the-shelf" oil that I can change as I
see fit??

If it does come with "break-in" oil, how long should it be left in??

I didn't think there were any manufacturers that were still doing the "break-in" oil thing, but then
again, I didn't think there were any manufacturers that hadn't figured out how to turn off the
headlights when I turn off the ignition.

Thanx for your help,

Keith

With the oil change.. I'd just follow the manual.

Personally, I'd start using Synthetic after 20,000km... only because most
cars are well run-in at 20,000km , with better performance figures done at
20,000km of say the same car tested at 1000km, 5000km or 10000km.

There's plenty of reasons why one would need to have the lights on when the
car is turned off.

1. To test the lights
2. To test the strength of the battery by '1'.
3. To test the light's mechanism if it's a flip light.
4. After turning off car.. you notice something in the dark.. do U want to
crank the car just to use the lights??
etc....etc...etc.... I think you get my drift by now? :)

I had my 2000 Accord serviced by the dealer at 3500KM and they never told me
anything about break-in-oil and the length of time it should stay in the
engine. I have a friend with a 97 civic and he told be that he was told
that the manufactures oil should stay in for the full service period (I
guess 6000/12000KM depending on where you live in NA). Who knows? Goes to
show that you can't trust auto service people either because they don't know
everything or they don't treat their customers with honesty and respect.
(This is just my two cents.)

There is a special break in oil, it says so on the Honda site if you search
hard enough. Just follow the manual on service intervals and you should be
fine. Honda does not distinguish between 1st and subsequent changes. For
my 99 civic, it's either 3750 miles for severe service or 7500 for normal
driving. I did my first oil change at 3800 miles and used mobil 1 Synthetic
ever since, changing oil every 5000-6000 miles (most of my miles come on the
highway, some city, hence a middle ground change interval.

From the Honda web site...

http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/Maintenance/maint_faqs.asp?faq=oil

Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?
Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially
formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural"
wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing
process.
American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the
engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until
the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based
on your specific driving conditions.

I've been using 0w-30 Mobil 1 for a few years now. You could also try 5w-30.
