These two minivan are making me go nut.
First I love Odyssey, but U C in NYC, there's a waiting list.
Yet I need it know. So then I went to Mazda. But's it holding me back
from buying it bcuz' it's not just that they don't have it in stock,
it's that the MPV has a small engine, 2.5l. Now I was wondering, with
another additional 2k, I could get a odyssey w/ 3.5l and 200's hp, but
it's not available.
As of now, I don't know what to do. U C the only reason I like these two
minivan, is that both minivan has the same seating.
With MPV 2.5l, can anyone tell me how does it handle on the highway
because I'm planning to go long trip. Does it pickup speed really good?
I'm not expecting to pickup speed like a sports car. I just
want to comparing the pickup speed with rest of the minivan.

Thank you.

The Mazda MPV has a 2.5l V6 that makes 170hp @ 6250rpm and 165lb/ft of
torque at 4250 rpm and weighs about 3600 lbs. The Odyssey has a 3.5l V6
that makes 210hp @ 5200 rpm and 229 lb/ft of torque at 4300 rpm and weighs
about 4200 lbs. The Odyssey gives you 18/25 mpg and the MPV 18/23. The
Odyssey is MUCH bigger than the MPV and I personally believe handles a lot
better.

I've driven both vehicles and trust me, the MPV is sluggish and the engine
works hard to propel the vehicle. If you're interested in a smaller minivan
that is about the size of a car and handles like one, try the Toyota Sienna.
I think the Sienna is more luxurious compared to the Odyssey (high-end
model). The Sienna was just a bit too small for my needs. I'd highly
recommend the Odyssey, even though you may have to wait a while and pay
MSRP. HTH...

if you need it now, it doesn't sound like you have much choice unless you're
willing to pay big bucks. for example, i've been on a waiting list for a few
months now to buy one at msrp. if i wanted to pay $1,500-$4,000 over msrp, i
could get it within days.

anyway, the merits of both are debated extensively at
http://townhall.edmunds.com/cgi-bin/townhall?c=Vans&t=1305

you might also want to read:

when i test drove the mpv, i was actually shocked at how sluggish it felt
with just me and the salesman aboard. however, owners report they find it
quite peppy.

good luck

i paid over $700 over msrp but the $700 was a "car care pkg" that included
complete detailing and protective treatments inside & out. this car care
would be for every 6 mos thru-out time of lease.

i waited for the odyssey bc it was the best minivan for the price - my
criteria were power, drivability, reputation, size, seating combinations,
and SAFETY.

the windstar, odyssey, and sienna are the best rated in terms of safety.

by the time you added the features you wanted on the sienna and windstar,
the price would be higher than the EX MSRP.

i've had mine for 2 mos now and the only complaint is the gas mileage... i
haven't been able to achieve the 18/25 that is claimed.

other than that... can't complain!

finalfour, are you sure that's what the car care package includes? the
reason i ask was that when i bought my 88 integra, i bought a car care
package too. the way i understood it was that i could bring the car back
every six months and they would polish and retreat the paint for me for the
first five years. when i showed up after 6 months, they had no idea what i
was talking about! now, i'm not stupid but they explained that what i bought
was a one-time application of their "paint sealant" and a bottle of polish i
was supposed to apply myself every 6 months. pretty nutty, huh?

You really gotta drive it and see for yourself, but I agree with what
the others have said - the Mazda needs a more powerful motor. Don't get
me wrong, the 2.5L is a gem but a larger motor with more torque would
suit a heavy vehicle with an automatic tranny such as this minivan
better. I'm really puzzled as to why they didn't go with the Duratec
3.0L - it's about the same size as the 2.5L so fitment shouldn't be a
problem. It probably had more to do with finding a suitably matched
tranny.

That said, the MPV should be fairly responsive on the highway as that
motor really comes alive at higher revs - below 3500 RPM it's in effect
only operating as an 18-valve motor.

Anyways, I'd go with the Odyssey myself as you can't go wrong with that
V6 from the Acura RL! I've seen a few in town and those vans move really
smartly off the line.

I hope this helps,

Gerald

I've been a passenger in both. It was very tight in the MPV.

Try renting an MPV from Hertz. Then you can try it for yourself. ... Steve

I had the same problem. Loved the Honda's power but I could not bring
myself to pay $1,000 over MSRP. I loaded the Mazda with everything but
leather and got it for dealer cost (22,900). Drives fast on the
highway, not much acceleration. It's my wife's car though and she loves
it. Fortunately, I have my Integra GS-R so I can get acceleration fix
there.

The Odyessy can be bough at list or under if you a patient and look
around ( I( bough my 2k LK for $ 1000 under list. Go to the
www.edmunds.com "town hall section". Overall I like it ,except for
seat comfort is about the worst I have ever had. More than a few
people have complained of mechanical problems and being stonewalled by
American Honda (again look around the edmunds message boards) . It
sound like Honda is acting more and more like the big 3 - who knows,
they may merge with GM :). Rent or boorw whatever you plan to buy and
talk to other owners first brefore buying.

sheesh cutty, i hope you're wrong.

but i figured that if i had to pay more than msrp, i wasn't willing to pay
more than $1000 and i figured a good detailing every 6 mos can't hurt.

ask me in six months...

:)
