From the beginning I never liked the RE92's. They never seemed to possess
much in the way of grip and taking turns at anything much faster than a
leisurely pace elicited screams of protest. On the plus side, they never
surprised me in the wet. Alas, budget limitations prevented early
retirement for the RE92's, so they remained on the EX for the last 3 1/2
years. Well, the budget situation hasn't improved sufficiently for me to
throw a big wad of cash at new rubber (although a new set of wheels are
being considered - just too many Civics coupes in the parking lot at
work...). Now, I don't usually drive the way Alex Zanardi passed Bryan
Herta in the final lap at Laguna Seca last Sunday (and what a sweet pass
it was!). On the other hand, I prefer not to find myself stuck behind
"moving roadblocks" (typically an Oldsmobile piloted by a geriatric ward
escapee). I was looking for cheap, decent handling tires.
Well, Consumer Reports (ugh) top rated the Dunlop D60A2's last year (also
seem to recall reading something good about them somewhere else)...
Anyway, they were on sale at a local tire emporium (for less than recent
mail order prices) so I went ahead and had set mounted on the Civic. I was
quite surprised with the improvement. Handling and steering response seems
to be crisper and lo and behold - silence through the turns! No increase
in freeway noise (perhaps even a bit quieter) and we'll wait and see when
the rains come. Yes, we're comparing a new set of tires vs. old, but I'm
pretty sure my memory is telling me the RE92's were never this good. Gee,
maybe Consumer Reports wasn't too far off base after all.
Of course, I didn't expect them to transform the Civic into a balls out
G-machine, but all in all I'm happy with 'em.
