The first time I start my car in the morning, after backing up out of the
driveway and engaging it into "D4", I hear this sound coming from the
engine compartment that sounds like some motorized valve closing. The
sound lasts for 2-3 seconds. It usually happens within the first 30
seconds of driving in "D", and seems to be independent of the A/C
ventilation system.
If I park my car somehwere for a few hours, then put it into "D" again,
the sound reoccurs. It never happens while I'm backing up, and sometimes
if I just let the car idle in "D" before I actually press the gas, it
waits until then.
If anyone has ANY idea what this is, please let me know. I don't think
its a problem because the car has been like this for as long as I've had
it (since it was showroom new), but I've tried to describe this to some
mechanic friends but they don't have any idea what I'm talking about.

I bought my '92 Prelude Si 5sp. about 4 months ago.. and I too have
experienced the exact same thing since day one.. I believe it's the
the ABS pump charging up or something.. although I might be completely
wrong.. Maybe someone could shed some light on this. I'd be interested
in knowing what _exactly_ is happening when this sound occurs.
Cheers,
Sol.

Yeah, I do have abs, and I believe the other two guys who responded to
this do too. The 92-96 Preludes all had abs except for the "S" model, if
I remember correctly.
Thanks for all the replies, I'll buy this story that the noise is related
to the ABS. But just out of curiosity,
1. How did you guys figure this out?
2. and why does this this only happen periodically, not every time
I start the car?
one more thing to add, the noise comes from the passenger side of the car.
Again, thanks for solving an old problem for me.
Mahalo and aloha!
Maybe the abs unit is on the passenger side. I know the seat belt sensor
is behind the passenger kickpanel on my '92 Integra.

Yep, all you are on the right track. Its the ABS pumping up the
system. When I first got my car, I had the Honda dealer point out to
me exactly what was going on, to make sure the sound was normal.
Although I have never been able to pinpoint what makes the system
actually pressurize, because sometimes it happens right away, and
other times it happens the first time I hit the brakes, which can be
up to 4-5 minutes later.
