The coolant is getting low in my Civic. I called Two Honda shops both
wanted $13 for a gallon of coolant/antifreeze. Worth it? ...or will
the Wal-Mart brand work the same? How about all the other fluids in the
engine? Should Genuine Honda fluids be used?

..My father has some antifreeze in the garage. I know it's not Genuine
Honda coolant!

It stick with the geniune Honda stuff. $13 isn't that much considering
how long a gallon will last you. (Assuming you just add some from time to
time and don't flush it every month)

My local Honda dealer uses a no name-copy machine label coolant when
replacing coolant. I would not suggest mixing different coolants-just add
water and when you do replace the coolant-max of 2 years-use any national
brand that says it works for aluminum blocks. Leave the coolant in too long
and you can wreck the gaskets/water pump and radiator. Dispose of coolant
properly-it is toxic as hell-will kill any animal that happens to drink it
because it tastes sweet to them.

Use the Honda Coolant with distilled water.

Only the Honda coolant meets the specs , and only the Honda coolant will
protect the engine from corrosion AND protect the water pump.

Zerex has a 5 year/ 150,000 mile coolant which is the next closest to the
silicate/ borate free Honda specification.

Dex-Cool while excellent is not the best choice for Honda.

Low silicate/ low phosphate green ethylene glycol coolant can cause pitting of
the cylinder head and early water pump failure.

Since the water pump is driven by the timing belt... the water pump is more
critical to engine operation and more expensive to service .

Use the factory coolant.

Great link thanks!

Why must I use Honda-brand antifreeze/coolant in my engine/radiator?

Most coolants labeled safe for aluminum engines actually aren't. The silicates
and/or borates added to most coolants act as abrasives on the cooling systems.

Honda's formulation for coolant does not use silicates or borates to enhance
the corrosion protection for aluminum components. Instead, Genuine Honda
antifreeze/coolant uses a proprietary organic corrosion inhibitor.

The advantages of the Honda coolant are clear. Its ability to inhibit corrosion
and the absence of silicates makes it the only coolant recommended for your
Honda.

If Genuine Honda antifreeze/coolant is not available, you may use another
major-brand non-silicate coolant as a temporary replacement. Make sure it is a
high-quality coolant recommended for aluminum engines.

However, continued use of any non-Honda coolant may result in corrosion,
causing the cooling system to malfunction or fail. Have the cooling system
flushed and refilled with Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible.

I love it when people post this. Know why the animals love to drink
sweet tasting antifreeze? Because of the polyethelyene glycol! This is
an actual sweetner used in products!---all you Mountain Dew drinkers
check out your Mountain Dew can and the sweetening ingredient listed
there is indeed the one and only antifreeze component that will kill,
polyethelyene glycol! Does that mean if you drink enough Dew it can
kill you? I don't think I would like to test that theory but I know
people that consumed huge quantities (6 pack a day!) and always seemed
to be sick.

I do not have Mountain Dew at hand to check it, but the major component of
antifreeze is not polyethylene glycol, but ethylene glycol (monomeric!) and it may
make the whole difference. Ethylene glycol is toxic while PEG is not.

I have a 95 Accord and learned the hard way, at 30k replaced the Anti-
freeze with Prestone. At 50k the water pump leaked. Honda picked up
the tab. They never asked me if I changed the anti freeze. The next
time I will spend the $10 for the Honda anti-freeze

I have 91 Civic DX with auto transmission, 122K miles on it now. I've
always used generic transmission fluid(replaced it every 30K) and ZEREX
antifreeze. Water pump was replaced at 90K with timing belt and all the
belts not because it leaked but just because it could.

Don't waste your money on the Honda coolant. Do you watch the mechanics to
see what kind the are putting in? Does it say "Honda coolant 1 gal" on your
bill? NOPE! Just list coolant. My local dealer, the biggest in about 200
radius, uses no name coolant called Full Force. It is $9 a gal vs. $13 a gal
for the Honda stuff.

I told that same story to my dealership here in western Pa. He laughed, said we
use Texaco
in all our cars! ( There is a good profit replacing water pumps) I bought the
Honda coolant, very
cheap insurance, Also, use Disilled Water, very cheap in the grocery store!
