Where's a good track around Austin, Texas to run a 1/4 mile? This
would be my first time doing this so any advice on how it works, etc.
would be appreciated (i.e -- do you get a timeslip on each run or an
average of 3? Do you pay by runs or by the hour? etc...).

Thanks,
Chris

First, check here to see if there are any listings for a track near
you. http://www.chasinracin.com/track-locator/index.html

You generally get a slip after each run, and generally pay one
admission fee and can make as many runs as you like, though tracks can
be crowded at prime times and you won't get in too many runs before
the track closes.

Here is a site that has some info on racing for the first time:
http://sl.rconcepts.com/guide/

Also, you might be interested in this site, the NHRA web page. It
has a lot of stuff that might help you out.

There's maybe something else on those that I forgot, but
it probably doesn't matter as much. ;) Probably.

Isn't there a track in Temple, TX? There's always that piece of sh_t
track in San Antonio (Alamo Drawway), that's if it is still open of
course (I wouldn't be surprised if it was finally closed). I have heard
rumors that a new 1/4 track was going to be built near Austin (somewhere
just east--someone told me about 30 minutes from Austin). I don't know
whatever happened to that tho.

Yes, you get a time slip after every run, it should contain (at a
minimum):
1. Reaction Time (for you and your opponent)
2. 60 ft time (for you and your opponent)
1/8 ET & MPH (for you and your opponent)
1/4 ET & MPH (for you and your opponent)

You pay an entrance fee, choose which catagory you want to race in
(usually there is a "street" or possibly a "trophy" class that are
pretty good for people just starting out).

The best way to learn is to go to the track and just watch. Get a seat
near the starting line and watch what other people do (burn outs,
staging, etc.)

Good luck and have fun. BTW, if you hear anything about a new track
in/near Austin, please post it back here (I'll be moving to Austin in
about a yr and a 1/2 or so). Thanks!

Alamo dragway is still in business in San Antonio. The track is in poor shape.

the new track is supposed to be around Selma,
just north of SA
