Does anyone know what year ford switched to EEC V? My old man has a 1996
town car with the 4.6L. What kind of EEC does it have and where is the wire
to check for fault codes (if EEC V has it?)

Thanks

I believe Ford switched to EEC V (OBD II) in 1996. I think the diagnostic
port is standardized for all makes and the connector is inside on the
drivers side. Any one have more specific information??

Actually, the transition to EEC V was done over a several year period ending in
97 I think. Example, for the 95 Mustang the V6 was EEC-V but the 5.0 wasn't.
Also consider the Explorer. In 96 the 4.0 V6 and 5.0 were EEC-IV. In 97 all
Explorer engines were EEC-V.
Your dad's towncar is probably EEC-V. Look for a multipin rectangular
connector at the bottom edge of the dash. I may be back from the edge somewhat
or look around the back edge of the radio stack. If thats the case, the only
way to read codes is with a OBD-II scanner. Probably $200.
