Just curious, what would a good estimate be for getting a decent quality paint
job for a 90 GT? When I painted my 85 LX years ago (not enough free time
now!), I found lots of corrosion in the rear hatch and under the doors. Would
it be worth it to have these areas stripped down to metal to ensure rust won't
crop up (unfortunately I drive the car in Ohio winters). TIA

Alan,
It is hard to tell without looking at the car... but assuming that you
don't want to change the color (changing the color is more expensive... you
have door jambs, under hood etc...) and that you want a good job expect to
pay around $2500-3000 for a good job. I would recommend stripping down to
the metal if you have any visible rust. The price will climb if rust is
found because it will need to be cut out and new metal riveted in. I used
to work at my fathers body shop, and we used to actually restore many old
Mustangs. It was great to watch old '65 and '64.5 rust buckets come in and
leave like they were brand new. But do save up if this sounds high, because
the worst thing that you can do is to get a bad paint job, because then you
are out more money. I've seen it too many times, people would come in for
estimates, they were initially surprised by the high price, they would go
elsewhere and get terrible paint jobs and then they would come to tus to
fix it. (Repaint it) Make sure that the place at least has a paint booth.
It doesn't have to be top of the line just something that provides a
cleaner environment. Take a look at some of the cars that are parked
outside of the shop. See how they are painted. Look for orange peel, if you
see a lot of this then the painter is not very experienced, look for dust
that was painted over, dust is almost unavoidable but a lot of it means
that the environment wasn't so clean (i.e. no paint booth) Don't settle
for photos as they can't show many of the flaws. Also make sure they use
good paint. I personally believe that Dupont is the best. I also prefer 2
stage lacquer, but it takes longer and is more expensive than single stage
paints. (imperative that the painter is good in order to use lacquer)

Whoops I've been rambing... well good luck,

Now I know why I've painted 3 cars so far <g>. How good of a paint job would
you get for $2500 - 3000? Is this average for others who have had their cars
repainted? And would the repaint last as long as the factory paint? Thanks...
