Can anyone clear this up for me? I am new to Fords but have been
building Mopars for years so I have technical knowledge, just not the
brands specifics.
Also,
would the crossmember be the same?
do the trannies (C4 or C6) differ year to year? If so, which
years are good ones?
do the bellhousings differ year to year ? (For example: if I
use a 68 302 do I have to use a specific year trans or bellhousing?)
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. You can post a reply or e-mail
me at hj...@earthlink.net
Thanks

A C-6 is stronger but it weighs more than a C-4 and unless you plan on
making major horsepower (over say 600) theres no need for a C-6

Ford did make a small block C-6 but the bellhousings on C-6's don't
separate from the tranny like a C-4 does

As far as the year to year differance I'm not sure other than input
shaft spline count on C-4's 24 or 26 spline.
You should use a C-4 with a medium sized bellhousing 10 1/2 in diameter
flywheel. I think that is what came in those cars. The bigger
bellhousing would limit room for headers in the small chassis.

The bellhousing of on a C6 and C4 transmissions are not removable. They
are cast as part of the tranmission case. C6 automatic transmissions were
mainly used behind 390 and 428 engines. It was never intended to be used
behind a small block V-8. You would be off with a C4 transmission. Check
with a 66 Mustang shop manual you might find that the transmisson might
have been an MX which was an early ford three speed automatic
transmission. You might also want to check with the Mustang speciallity
magazines for more information.
The C4 can be beefed up by changing the number of clutch packs used for
low/reverse and high gears and also a shift kit. You might also want
check the bolt pattern of the bellhousing on the small block because they
might be different. A Mustang Shop Manual should be helpful in this case.
Also a good source of parts compatiblity could be at you locate Ford part
department. They might still have some of the parts catologs from that
time available.

You might spend some time on research yourself. Let's nip some of this
nonsense in the bud before it gets around.
The bell housing on C4's ARE removeable. Any article on rebuilds or the
factory sevice manual will show you that. C6's have theirs cast with the
main body, and come in three styles: FE big block,429-460/351M-400M, and
SMALL BLOCK (289-302-351W-351C). MX transmissions debuted in the 1969 cars
behind 351's, and are a medium-duty design descendant of the Ford
Cruise-0-Matic. The only V8 automatic in a '66 Mustang would be a C4 (which
came out for '64, which would be C4 in Ford parts language. Care to guess
when the C6 came out?).
The C6's factory use behind small blocks started in 1971 behind both
styles of 351's. This came about because the FMX was not cutting it in the
longevity department. They are most commonly found behind 70's Windsors in
trucks and vans, as well as 351 HO and CJ cars. It is true that they are an
overkill behind all but the nastiest 289-302 engines.

To be more precise, pre-'66 small blocks had 5-bolt housings. '66 and
later had 6-bolt housings.
A Mustang Shop Manual should be helpful in this case.

Better yet would be anyone that has been in the transmission biz for a
while, as they have no doubt done hundreds or thousands of them.

The two bellhousing patterns are the same. Your welcome.

Speaking of C4's......I have my stock '79 C4 (with a shift kit and 10inch
convertor) matched up to an '86 302. If I plan to upgrade to a 351W, what
bellhousing(s) will work? Thanks.
