Also, if the method involves using some kind of scraper, will this hurt either
the rear window defroster or those little painted/raised black dots at the
edges of the rear windows?
Thanks much!

When they changed the tint laws here in Alabama, I had to remove two
car's worth of tint. It's so simple...
Make up a spary bottle solution of dishwashing setergent and water. One
single-sided razor blade (you can get these with a little holder at any
auto parts store for a buck or two). Spray the tint liberally with the
solution. Use the blade to start one corner. Pull in a diagonal
direction while spraying between the tint and the window. Take your
time and it comes right off. Use the solution to finish cleaning off
any glue left behind.
As far as defroster lines, just be careful. I found that any weak spots
broke anyway, even though I wasn't using the blade in that area. Most
auto parts stores have a defroster repair kit. It contains a small
bottle of paint, a brush, and a guide. I found the breaks by using a
multimeter, then used celophane tape as a guide rather than what the
kit had. Worked great. I never saw any problems with the "little black
dots".
